MELBOURNE CUP REDUCED IN VALUE. Just before the outbreak of the Avar the Melbourne Cup was again well on the way to 0,000, but Inst year it was cut down from 0,000 to 5,000, and this year says tin? Sydney "Referee" there will be a further reduction to 0,000. this, principally, because the Victoria Racing Club is giving all its profits during war time to patriotic funds. The reduction might have been unnecessary, only that the wet weather last November caused u marked, falling off in the profits of the Melbourne Cup meeting as compared with previous years. No further alterations have been decided upon in connection with the prize money at the Cup meeting, but the value of several races at the Grand National and Birthday meetings will be less than in the past. The Grand National Hurdle race and Grand National Steeplechase, have each been reduced from ,500 to .1917.sh,250 and 00 each taken off several flat races at the same meeting.
