Won cantering;- second and third driving. BASIL began slowly, but secured a clear course on the outside of the leaders and, racing into the lead in the homestretch, won under stout restraint. MASTER McGRATH raced forwardly and held on gamely to the finish. MOTHER MACHREE met with early interference, but closed a big gap and finished fast. POLLY J. set the early pace, but quit. PORT LIGHT ran a fast half and quit also. HIDDEN STAR ran well. BAR OF PHOENIX closed a big gap. Won handily; second and third driving. POACHER, after being saved to the stretch, passed the leaders at the eighth post and, holding on gamely, outstayed PARTIZAN in the final drive. PARTIZAN, under pressure from the start, lacked early speed, but closed up steadily in the final quarter and was gaining at the finish. GEORGE WASHINGTON raced next to the rail all the way and finished gamely. NEPPERHAN raced SVENGALI and CAVAN BOY into defeat in the early running, but tired in the final eighth.
