TRYING TO EXTEND TIME LIMIT. Horsemen at Work but Chance Is Said to Be Remote Appointment of Commission Is Likely. Ottawa, Ont., July 28. While the present meetings are scheduled to be the last in Canada until after .the war, according to the order-in-couucil recently passed, members of the Thoroughbred Horsemens Association nre still working with a view to having the time limit extended, in which event there would be meetings next month at Connaught Park, Dorval and Blue Bonnets. Prospects in this direction were said today to be remote. It is intimated on good authority that the government would sanction a resumption of racing next year and that it would be under a commission composed of capable Ontario and Quebec citizens. Plans of course, may be greatly altered meanwhile. "I am in favor of the appointment of a racing commission," said a prominent member of the Connaught Park Jockey Club yesterday. "In fact. I believe that suggestion offers the only plausible solution of the difficulties which have accumulated during tiie past few years. The selection of a National Racing Commission, composed of prominent men, who are familiar witli the sport, the application of the law, moderating the profits of tlie clubs to about ten per cent of the Invested capital and the contribution of the balance to charitable institutions, would place the sport on a much higher plane and assure its success for all time. There i3 no doubt that horse racing in Canada needs a thorough renovation. Half mile tracks must certainly be eliminated and one or two of the mile courses should also be closed. This would restore normal conditions, as they were four or five years ago and pave the way for satisfaction all around."
