SPUR IN THE LAST STRIDE. BUTXER CRACK WINS THE YONKERS HANDICAP IN AN EXCITING FINISH. English Mare Clematis II. Runs a Fine Race and Only Succumbs to the Victor by a Few Inches Owner Colton May Sell His Horses. New York, July 28. James Butlers crack four-year-old Spur ran back to his recent winning form in . the Empire City Handicap, when lie scored a driving victory in the Yonkers Handicap, the mile and a sixteenth feature of this afternoons program at the hill top course. The largest crowd of the meeting was on hand to witness this Butler victory, and the success was a most popular one. The son of King James ruled a prohibitive choice on the lawn and, while he equaled the track record when lie covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:44, his victory was hardly as decisive as his price "would forecast. Lady Rotlia, the lightweight of the field, cut out the running and this mare raced along at a speedy pace in the early running. St. Isidore was in the rear; when rounding tlie last turn Robinson sent Clematis II. along into second place and this was the only change in the order until the field swung into the straightaway. Then Clematis II. quickly shortened the gap that separated her from the pacemaker, while Spur was coming from the rear with his wonted express train rush. Not until the eighth post was passed did Lady Rotha give up the struggle and, as the quartette sped into the final eighth, it was seen that the race would be a duel between Clematis II. and Spur. The English mare was the first to race to the front and she maintained this advantage until in the, last few yards, then Spur, which had been gradually wearing her down, headed the mare and won in the last stride.
