SARATOGAS RECORD-BREAKING CROWD Attendance of Saturday Largest in the History of Americas Famous Racing Center. By Ed Cole. Saratoga, N. Y.. August 13. The increased popularity of racing was never more pronounced than it was on Saturday last, when the largest crowd in the recent history of the track passed through the gates. "Not in. my recollection lias there ever been such a gathering at Saratoga." said Andrew Miller, "as there was last Saturday. It was perfectly wonderful and one that demonstrates the popularity of the thoroughbred. Then look at the enormous prices that are being paid for horses these days. This is partly due to rich purses and stakes that are offered all over the country. A purse horse can win a lot of money these days, and the earning possibilities of a thoroughbred have been more than doubled from what they were a few years ago." While Frank Nolan, the owner of the Reverwycb Stable, is selling put his stock, it is not his in- tention to give up all- interest in racing. He is" not in the best of health "and will rest for a while. As soon as he improves his well known colors will be seen again. He is keeping - all his tackle, blankets, etc., ready to be fitted on another band of horses. King Herod Has Many Admirers. King Herod had many admirers in the paddock after he ran second to Meteorite. It was the general verdict that he is a good looker from nose to tail in fact judges pronounce him inlrfect. "He ran a mighty good race" said his trainer, D. R. McDaniel, "considering the fact that he is not a work horse. All I could get him to do was three-quarters in 1:17. He has to be braced to get him fit and todays race will do him a lot of good. The horse that beat him today can beat almost any mans horse and it was the fastest race of the meeting." The layers have received . many a body blow -so far at this meeting. It is a case of bing-bing almost every time," said one of the leading operators in the clubhouse. "I dont know how long the bankroll is going to hold if they keep coming this way. One backer on. Saturday won 2,000 on Dan. You would hardly think that nossiblb, but it is nevertheless a fact. He Was not the only Dan supporter either. He had plenty of followers. No matter what horse wins, there is .always somebody with a full stack of checks settled on him." Sol Lichtenstein was a visitor at the track. While still in ill health, he is improving. After Capra was beaten, handicapners looked over the records to reason why she was so badly beaten. The majority came to the conclusion she is not one of the best weight carriers. 4
