ADIRONDACK HANDICAP DAY. MR. WHITNEYS HAPPY GO LUCKY TAKES HIS TURN IN CONFUSING FORM EXPERTS. Wins All the Way and Defeats Jack Hare Jr. .and Kashmir Among Others Close Finish Between Sam McMeekin, Blue Thistle and The Grader. By J. L. Dempsey. Saratoga, N. Y., August 28. The Adirondack Handicap, for two-year-olds, having a guaranteed value of ,500, but worth ,750 net to the winner, was won by H. P. Whitneys Happy. Jo Lucky, and served to further obscure the question of the juvenile superiority in these parts. Matinee Idol landed in second place and Jack Hare Jr. third, with Kashmir following. There were twelve starters in the race, G. F. Muller deciding to add Drill Master late in the afternoon. The winner showed a high flight of speed from the start, followed by Matinee Idol and Jack Hare Jr., but in the last eighth his lead was seriously threatened by Matinee Idol, which, under Butwells rousing ride, was creeping steadily to the fore. Just about when he was drawing level with the- leader, he bolted into the fence, mostly due to flinching from the whip, and the swerve, though brief, put him out of contention so far as first money was concerned, for it enabled Happy Go Lucky to draw out into a good lead. Butwell was nearly unseated when his leg came in contact with the fence, and he bruised his toes considerably. It also put Matinee Idols chances for second place in serioijs jeopardy, as Jack Haru Jr. moved by him in the last sixteenth, but Matinee Idol recovered in time to overhaul again tiie fast tiring Jack Hare Jr. in, the last stride. Happy Go Lucky is Harry Payne Whitneys mainstay for Futurity honors and on" his showing this afternoon must be regarded seriously. The stewards, to satisfy them, selv.es that Happy, Go Lucky had not caused the foul. questoned JJutwell and he stated that Matinee. Idols swerve under punishment was solely responsible for his coming in contact with the fence. One of the most thrilling finishes of the meeting developed with the running of the fifth race in which Sam McMeekin, triumphed by a nose over Blue Thistle with The Grader, the sumo margin back. The trio of placed ones began their drive on the stretch turn and had the onlookers in a frenzy. Butwells superior horsemanship was the determining factor at the end. Sam C. Hildreths colors were carried to victory for the first time in this country by one ,ot- his own horses since he raced Novelty, in 1910, . when Serenest landed In advance of the three-year-olds starting in the closing race. Assume finished second and Flora Finch third. After the" finish Walter II. Pearce advanced the winner from an entered price of 00 to ,505, at which figure she was retained. Pearce also figured in.a -runup Jafter the third race, won by First Ballot.- That fillv was entered for 00 and it cost her owner 05 to retain her. Small fields this afternoon were productive of enjoyable contests and close finishes. Tim attendance considering numerous recent departures from these parts, was of good proportion, but betting, activities were a trifle light. The maiden youngsters starting in the opener enabled the French celt, Rapid Firer, ....... to score brackets. The following race went to R. T. Wilsons Silver Sandals. Her short odds was not justifiable in view of her narrow escape from defeat. Passing Fancy forcing her to a severe drive to win by a head. Capt. E. 15. Cassatt nut in a claim for Adoration II. after the finish of the fjr.st race,, but. it was a French claiming race, in which the horse intended must be claimed before the race and when claimed be disqualified from starting. The stewards ruled the claim invalid. Mr. Cassatt intends taking the matter before the Jockey Club. Big Price Asked for McDowell Yearlings, Thomas Welch, who is in charge of the J. E. Widener horses, returned this afternoon from his trip to Lexington, Ky., where he had been to T. C. McDowells Ashland Farm, to inspect Mr. McDowells pick of his yearling crop. Mr. McDowell values those he now has at Ashland Farm highly and if he transfers any of them to. Mr. Widener, it will be at a big price. Authoritative advice was received today that Joseph A. Murphy had concluded a contract for the Detroit Fair Grounds and that racing at that plant was contemplated, beginning September 15, for a period of thirteen days. Trainer W. B. Jennings stated this afternoon, that, the injury sustained by the crack rait War Cloud was trivial and that it would not interfere with his training. . Jockey J. Hanover will depart for Louisville with i the John W. Schorr horses next. week. At present i it is Mr. Schorrs intention to send about nine horses to be raced at Lexington and they will be , in charge of Louis Tauber. Jockey A. Mott was this morning discharged : from a local hospital, much recovered from his ; recent illness. He was advised by the doctors, to cease reducing, otherwise it may terminate fatally i for himself. It appears that his riding days, are ! over, for he weighs close to 125 pounds at the present.
