WAR CLOUD MAY BE BEST OF HIS AGE A. K. Macomber Colt Considered Topnotcher and. in Lino for Juvenile Championship. By J. R. Jeff cry. Saratoga, N. Y., August 29. The manner in which A. K. Macombers colt War Cloud, by Poly-melus Dreamy, won the allowance race, for which he ruled a prohibitive favorite Monday, removed all doubt as to the colts pretensions to consideration as one of the topnotch two-year-olds of the year. It was on everybodys lips after the race was over that War Cloud had made good all that had been claimed for him and that the chances are that he will turn out to be the best two-year-old of the year. It is certain that War Cloud will rule one of the choices for the 25,000 Hopeful Stakes, with which the Saratoga meeting will be brought to a close on Thursday. Mr. Macomber was warmly congratulated upon the possession of such a high-class colt, and the wish was universally expressed that his deeds in racing may compensate his popular owner for the many mishaps that have befallen other members of his stable this .year. The racing chart tells the story of how War Cloud, away from the starting barrier in a tangle, and buffeted about in the early running, came from far back in true race horse fashion to turn Avhiit appeared like impending defeat into a brilliant victory. Gave an Exhibition of Ball Dog Gamencss. It was really necessary to have been a spectator of the race, however, to fully appreciate the wonderful race that War Cloud ran. After getting into his stride, he moved up to the leaders like a flash of lightning in rounding tlie turn when jockey Loftus called upon him and then, after having been subjected to such an extraordinary ordeal, gave an exhibition of bulldog gameriess in the final drive that aroused the onlookers to a realization that here was a colt worthy of the highest admiration. War Cloud has now run two convincing races. Before he raced he" had worked so well that those who keep informed on such matters had tabbed him as possibly the best colt of the year, and it is thought that the Saratoga track does not particularly suit him, as he is a long-striding liorse. The cuppy track conditions prevailing here are .anything but favorable to a horse of this type. So it is predicted that he will show to even better advantage at Belmont Park and Aqueduct, where -he will doubtless be seen later in the "year. It probably is a lucky . thing for tho.. owners, of other eligibles "for that rich" race that he was not nominated by his English breeders for the Futurity. In the Hopeful Stakes tomorrow, he will have to beat two good colts in Sun Briar and Lucullite. The latter is reported to have worked three-quarters in 1:14 yesterday in preparation for the race. War Cloud was worked out three-quarters in 1:14 after finishing his race yesterday. So, perhaps, the Hopeful will bring developments that will settle the question of two-year-old supremacy.
