ST. LOUIS RACING REVIVED. FINE ATTENDANCE CHEERS- THE LONG DELAYED RETURN OF THE RACERS. Heavy Going the Only Drawback to the Days En-joyment Pockichoo the Victor in the Mound City Handicap Medford Boy Beaten. St. Louis, Mo., August 29. St. Louis inaugurated its revival of racing under ideal weather conditions and an immense crowd turned out to welcome the thoroughbreds back after an absence of twelye, years. The crowd was treated with music and singing, with popular songs sang by male and female entertainers. Overnight rains turned the track, to a lane of mud and the mudlarks had an opportunity to show the lovers of thoroughbreds their capabilities in that style of - going. The feature race was robbed of much of its interest, owing to the track conditions bringing numerous scratches. W. C. Weant furnished the winner of the Mound City Handicap in Pdckichoo. This colt was saved behind Roscoe Goose to the stretch but when Taplin roused the son of Stalwart, he responded quickly and won going away. The disappointments of the race were Berlin and Phocion. They seemingly could not extend themselves in the going. The horses were given a hearty welcome by the crowd during the parade when going to the post for the opening dash. The winner of the initial race. Lady Luxury showed she was a good one in- the muddy going and made a show of her opponents. The real upset of the day was the defeat of the public choice Medford Boy, which made a wide stretch, this enabled the filly Louise Stone, recently acquired by the Covington turfman and trainer B. B. Brice, to get up in time to win. The last race, a claiming race, pleased the crowd with a rousing finish, which brought applause as Herbert Temple just managed to outstay Chief Brown. The latter closed a big gap in the last eighth. . .
