HOURLESS IN SUPERB FORM Wins at a Mile In Fast Time Never Fully Extended. Will Meet Omar Khayyam Next Saturday in the Lawrence Realization Stakes. By F. J. Ortell. New York, September 10. Cross country folks had their inning at the Belmont Park track this afternoon, when the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap was provided as the feature of the Monday program. Despite the fact that only three fencers started, the race afforded an excellent contest, with E. M. Welds St. Charlcote disposing of the Greentree Stables Cherry Malotte after a duel that lasted for an eighth of a mile. Skibbereen, the only other starter, was well beaten, after making the running. The winner and Cherry Malotte were saved in behind Skibbereen when that horse set out to make the running. Both moved up while rounding the final turn, but Cherry Malotte was the first to pass the pacemaker and, when approaching the final jump, she seemed like a winner all over. At the eighth post St. Charlcote moved alongside and in a hard drive, got up to win going away. The following is the interesting history of the Corinthian Steeplechase, todays running being the twelfth: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. . Val. Distance about 2 miles in 1914 and 1915. Overshadowing in interest the stake feature, was the reappearance under colors of August Belmonts good three-year-old Hourless, winner of the Withers, Belmont and Southampton Handicap. This colt was forced to little more than a canter to defeat Walnut Hall and Queen of the Water in the mile Handicap. He raced over this route in 1:38$; and was worked out a mile and a half in 2:38, going to the mile and a quarter mark in 2:07. This move was in preparation for the Lawrence Realization and was one that indicates the colt is back to his best form. G. A. Cochrans Ballast, winner of the third race, was bid lip from ,500 to ,300 by Walter Pearce, but was bought in by the stable for the usual advance. Condition books for the two days meeting at Piping Rock on October 6 and 10 have been issued. Entries will close on October 1, with Racing Secretary Frank Bryan. There was considerable discussion among the club members which horse would be the favorite in the Realization, Omar Khayyam or Hourless. After the latter had galloiwd a mile unextended in 1:38and in the Amityville Handicap, opinions were about equally divided among the experts, which indicates there will be little difference in the quotations unless the track is heavy, in which case Omar Khayyam would be the choice. NASHVILLE BAD POST ACTOR. Homo Sweet Home ran away a mile this morning, which caused his withdrawal. Nashville acted badly while going to the post, at the post and after the race, throwing Petz a half dozen times. Mr. Quinn, his owner, says lie never saw him act to badly before, though he is erratic in temner when in his stall. Future entries of Nashville were ordered refused. First Ballot was bid up from ,200 to ,700 by Walter Pearce, but was bought in by the owner for a advance. Richard Carman was here arranging for stall room for Omar Khayyam, which he will bring from Havre de Grace on Wednesday. "The horse is doing fine," said Mr. Carman, "and If lie does not win it will surprise me. I hope Hourless goes, for I want to see a horse that will give Omar a hard race." Friends of Frank Murray and Frank Flood, who were imth down with pneumonia during the Saratoga meeting, will be glad to learn they are out of danger. George W. Lofts Futurity winner, Papn, is booked to leave here on Wednesday for Louisville to run in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington. The colt has done execdingly well since his race last Saturday, showing no signs of distress. "Ho will leave here as fit as he ever was" said his trainer Max Hlrsch. J. Carroll, acting for W. 11. Coe, today sold the two-year-olds Kerry Kit and Marco Polo to J. AV. Panglc. The first-named is a filly by Jack Atkin St. Ursula and the second an English colt by Ma rco G eo f f ry. Kenneth Karrick, son of William Karrick and a former rider, has joined the United States Regular Army. C. W. Gasser was an arrival from Saratoga Springs with three racers. A. L. Aste showed a sister to the good racer, Ed Crump, in the first race when he sent Sun Kiss to the post. Algernon Daingerfield left for Havre de Graco today to do the preliminary work connected with the Jockey Club affairs customary at the opening of a meeting. W. P. Spurgeon took a day off from his Washington business to see Hourless run.
