f f j COMPLETE STATISTICS OF ENGLISH FLAT RACDJG FOR 1917 BRILLIANT GAY CRUSADER CHAMPION HORSE i : 1 The statistics of the English flat racing season of 1017, became complete with the running of the last race at Manchester on November 17. Compared with corresponding figures of the prewar years, their story is brief. The days of racing were few and the opportunities of men and horses to win money were "greatly reduced. The possession of a racer of such superlative qualities as Gay Crusader gave "Mr. Fairie" the leadership of the winning owners, witli a great interval between him and his nearest competitor. Lord Derby figuring in that role. The stable incomes of the owners whose horses won ,000 or more, were as follows: Winning Races Owner. Horses. Won. Value. I The outstanding brilliancy of Gay Crusader as a truly great young horse, Tvas supplemented by i I excellent performances on the" part of others less I I distinguished. Brown Prince, by winning the Cam- 1 I bridgeshire at a milu and an eighth in the fastest time on record for that race and then, on the next day, winning the Jockey Club Cup at two miles and a quarter, gave an extraordinary display of adapa- I bility to any distance and put on record a feat without precedent in connection with the two races. Phalaris won for himself the name of being the best sprinter seen in England since the days when Hornets Beauty was at his best. Then, a brilliant galaxy of two-year-olds in Gainsborough, Benevente, Freesiu. AAilton, My Dear. Damask, Aiolinist, Zin-ovia, Rocksavage, Georgia, Syndrian and others gave cheerful promise of great doing in the three-year-old division of next year. Altogether, the horses of the short racing season, kept it interspersed with feats which provided much to admire and talk about. Those which won ,000 or more were: Races Amount Horse, Col. For the fourth year in succession S. Donoghue is the champion jockey, his total of forty-two winning mounts being but one behind that of last year, though he has had fifty-nine fewer rides. Donoghue has been fortunate enough to ride the winner of what in ordinary years is known as the "Triple Crown," viz, the Two. Thousand Guineas, Derby and St. Leger, and in Gay Crusader he has been associated with probably the best horse of recent years. Certainly the manner iu which the son of Bayardo has cleared out his opponents leaves little room for doubt as to his excellence. In addition to these races, Donoghue was also successful in the Newmarket Gold Cup on the same horse, while among his handicap triumphs in the Manchester Cup. J. H. Martin has been riding in fine form and has shown several of his races that, though he has readied what he himself declares is the veteran stage, he can still give points in race riding to most of his contemporaries. In riding thirty-five winners and finishing second he has every reason to look back on the season with satisfaction. Rickaby, owing to Ills military duties, has had fewer opportunities than usual, but has done well. His chief success was on Diadem in the One Thousand Guineas, while he was also associated with Phalaris, the acknowledged champion sprinter of the year. Otto Madden, who returned to the saddle this season, lias ridden seventeen winners, chiefly for the Manton establishment, witli which he was connected before he took up training and he retains a good deal of the skill which made him famous some years ago. Among the younger members of the profession, Aictor Smyth, no longer an apprentice, has had a good season with thirty victories, while among the apprentices the most successful were Arthur Smith, attached to Barlings stable and G. Hulnie, who is with R. C. Dawson at AAThatcombe. The records of the leading riders are: Jockey. Mts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. P.O. Donoghue, S 218 41 33 24 120 18.80 Martin, J. Thanks to the success of Gay Crusader. Bayardo, which, unfortunately, died tills year, heads the list of winning sires, beating Polymelus, which has held the position for the past three years, by a substantial margin. Gay Crusader has been the biggest contributor to this result, his victories in the Two Thousand Guineas, New Derby and September Stakes contributing the major portion of the 10,180 pounds standing to his name. His other representatives are Bay dOr, Gainsborough, which many good judges think the best two-year-oid of the year, In-versnaid, Bapaume, Hampshire Lily and Gambado. His stock have .shown such promise this year that his loss will be all the more keenly felt. Polymelus has had more winners, but he has not sired a "classic" winner this year, though Benevente bids fair to do so in those confined to her sex next year. She won the New Coventry Stakes, amongst other events, and was unlucky to suffer defeat at all, as she got badly away when beaten by Aiolinist, Georgia and Pandion in the Rous Memorial Stakes. Orby was responsible for the One Thousand Guineas winner. Diadem, and Dark Ronald claims Brown Prince, which put up such a remarkable performance by winning the Cambridgeshire and Jockey Club Cup on successive days. Chaucer, which was second in the list last year, is now fifth. Henry the First takes a place in the leading twelve through the victories of First Flier, winner of the Irish Derby and it is worthy of note that, with the exception of the one race won by Athletic, all the victories credited to his representatives have been obtained in Ireland. Glasgeriou has but two winners to his name, but these are Carados and Elferion, two of the best youngsters in Ireland, which letveeii them won seven races. Bridge of Earns best, winner was Lady Earn, also an Irish two-year-old, while AAilton has assisted most towards the position held by Symington. Lomond is responsible for Ardlui, which is considered the crack two-year-old in Ireland; while three others have done well and show promise of giving their sire a further lift in the list next year.
