ONLY PLATERS CATERED TO Jefferson Park Racing Contested By the Lowest Class Horses. Redland Takes the Chief Race Despite His Recent Injuries Bowie Horses Reach Track. New Orleans, La., December C. The card of sir races at Jefferson Park this afternoon all had the claiming clause attachment and brought into the contests some of the poorer grade, as well as some fairly good platers. The sport, however, waH interesting and enjoyed by a large attendance. The best race carded was the mile and seventy yards dash, which went to Redland, that recently figured in a railroad accident, from which he came oat badly shaken up and cut. He was ridden by .J. McCabe, and the pair made a winning combination, though Indolence, which finished in second place, was probably the best In the race today. The backers again got away to a bad send off, their selections, Hope, Zin Del and Pilsen, in the first three races, being decisively beaten. Redland was a mild choice and Beauty Shop, the winner of the fifth, was an overwhelmingly backed one. Ber-todano. the winner of the last, had an extensive following, but Little Bigger ruled the choice. The remains of Edward Shevlin, the well-known Pinkertou operative, who died late yesterday afternoon, will be taken tonight to Baltimore for burial. The fifteen cars of horses from Bowie arrived this afternoon after a tedious and delayed trip. The horses, considering the long time they had been on the road, landed in fairly good condition. Friends of Hank Lewis are subscribing generously to secure for him the best medical attendance that can be had. He is improving steadily and has ti good chance for recovery. The condition book for next weeds racing was distributed to the horsemen this afternoon. Billy Oliver intends shipping a car of racers from his farm in Lakewood, N. J. J HORSES ARRIVE FROM TIJUANA. AV. AAalkers horses from Tijuana were arrival this morning. In the same, consignment came those of Larry Carey and E. Kessinger. According .to their report, there is little prospect of a meeting at Tijuana next winter and about 400 horses will be kept in idleness on the coast. Among the eastern arrivals today were AA H. Travers, Jack Odom and Larry Reinheimer. Jockey Russell McBermott also was an arrival from that section. Some of the horsemen, who are dissatisfied with the Kentucky claiming rule, which requires that all claims be put iu fifteen minutes before the race, instead of after, as is the rule here at present, have got up a protest against its adoption. A meeting will probably be held Saturday night, when something definite in the matter is expected to be decided upon. James Duckworth of Cincinnati, formerly a well-known layer, was among the arrivals from the Queen City today. He will remain throughout both meetings, according to his present plans. Jockey Hugh Shilling, who intends to ride at Havana, has been delayed here because of a technicality in the filing of his papers necessary to get a passport. Jockey Roy Estcp was suspended for four days by starter Dade for disobedience at the post. Humma, winner of the opening race, was claimed by Knebelkamp and Uowertou for 1,200.
