BIG FIELDS AT NEW ORLEANS Improved Track Conditions Bring Many Horses into Action. Erynlimah Defeats Harry Shaw by a Nose in the Main Race of the Afternoon. New Orleans, La., December 21. With a track improving rapidly, and helped by warm weather, local patrons of racing found matters in general at Jefferson Park today decidedly more pleasant than has been the case of late. If these agreeable conditions continue, excellent racing should be witnessed tomorrow, about the best card of the meeting so. far, having been provided for the occasion, with some well-known and speedy horses named to compete. The attendance was remarkably srood today and the -track, while not fast, was safe to race over and fairly good time was possible of accomplishment. Under such circumstances heavy speculation was to be expected and it was forthcoming throughout the afternoon. Chief interest was centered in the fourth race, a dash of one mile for all ages, in which some good racers were engaged. Rrynlimah scored a sensational victory over Harry Shaw, getting the verdict by a nose. The overconfidence of Connelly on Harry Shaw was responsible for that good old campaigners defeat. The finish in. the opening race was of the sensational order, with Marys Beau scoring by a head over Oriental Girl. Fourteen two-year-olds started in this nice and Marys Beau was off slowly and was knocked, about considerably. The filly, however, gained steadily, overhauled Oriental Girl in the last seventy, yards and got her head in front in the final strides. The showing of Breezy was disappointing, she quitting badly after racing prominently to thp stretch. Refugee, well ridden by Mack Garner, earned a close decision in the second race. Silvey Shapiro forced the early pace at a fast clip, but tired in the stretch and relinquished the lead to Blueban-nock. Garner then went to work on Refugee and the Hamburg gelding responded in game style, overhauling Bluebannock in the last sixteenth and drawing clear at the end. Garner clearly outrode Robinson. - G. W. Scotts three-year-old Sir Oliver displayed the most speed in the third race and, after disposing of Running Queen at the half, rushed into a big lead in the stretch and won in a canter. Sir Oliver was rid.den by, T. Rice, his first winning mount at the meeting. Untie, starting in the opening race and one of the well backed ones, was claimed by the Poland Stable for 900. T. J. Kearns, represented by Andes in the third race, put in a claim for Souvenir in the third race, but neglected to include the proper amount, 700, and his claim became automatically void. Jockey M. Rowan was given a sharp lecture Ijy the stewards for his bungling ride on Brighouse. He blamed jockey Dursch for cutting across him. The easterners carried off the honors of the afternoon with four victories. Jockey G. Sutherland had his first mount at the meeting, riding his fathers horse. Double Bass. Jockey Joe Notter, who is under contract to Harry Payne Whitney, will again don the silks and has accepted the mount on Bringhurst tomorrow.
