TRAINER OF FAMOUS BARCALDINE DIES Patrick Connolly, famous a long time ago as a great jockey and, after his ruling days were over, as a liighlv successful trainer, died last month at his home in Ireland. Among the great horses lie had to do with in one capacity or other were the unbeaten Barcaldine, The Baron, Bendigo, Man o War, Buckshot and a host more of high-class and fine performers. Concerning the early days of Barcaldine, an Irish writer says: "Pat Connolly wrote an interesting story of the career of Barcaldine and until his reminiscences were published, few knew really the truly great merits of that smasher. The first thing that impressed Connolly witli the idea that the colt which came to his place at The Curragli as a yearling might be something out of the ordinary, was that the man who had led him from Ids breeders place to Curragli View told Pat that the yearling "had nearly broken my heart, so fast did he walk. In looks it would appear from Connollys statement that Barcaldine was nothing out of the common in his yearling stage; indeed, according to the deceased chronicler, he was not much to look at. Barcaldine thrived so well at Curragli View that his trainer gradually became confirmed in his view tluit he had in his charge a colt destined to make turf history and, having advised Bnrcaldines then owner to that effect, it was arranged to put him through the mill. There was in the stable at the time a useful three-year-old. called Berengaria which at the stud became the dam of Ian and she had just previously won the Belfast Handicap at Down Royal meeting, her success being achieved under a light weight in a common canter. Barcaldine was set to give her nine pounds, plus of course, the year, he being a two-vear-old then. He beat the filly in a canter, the owner, who was looking on, being incredulous tlfit the two-year-old could be equal to the accomplishment."
