JEFFERSON PARKS W1NDUP Todays Racing Concludes the . Meeting Fair Grounds Next. Both Tracks Frozen Yesterday, ; but Weather Is Improving 1 Better Racing Expected. ! New Orleans, La.. December 30. Tomorrow winds lip the winter racing season at the Jefferson Parish track at Shrewsbury. On the following day, New Years Day, the sport will be inaugurated for a thirty-five days meeting at the old Fair Grounds track. With the change in the scene of racing. comes expectation of better snort than has been had at the Jefferson track, as many of the good horses , which have been resting .since leaving Maryland and Kentucky, will -be seen in action at the Fair Grounds. Taken as a whole, however, the Jefferson meeting came up to what was expected of it by its promoters, as well as the horsemen and the local patrons. It proved even better in some respects than was expected, when the adverse weather and track conditions which prevailed the greater part of the time, are taken into consideration. Old King "Winter still held sway here today, although it was somewhat warmer than on Saturday. Both tracks were frozen solid this morning, which prevented trainers from getting their charges out , until late in the day. Many of the trainers, whose horses are stabled at the Fair Grounds, gave their horses stiff work-outs Saturday afternoon in order to beat the freez-up which seemed sure to come on. Only a few horses were out at the Jefferson Park track today and those which were out were only given light gallops. Much favorable comment has been heard in regard to the putting on of the Red Cross Handicap, which is to be the feature of the closing day at the Jefferson track. Owners were not loath to put their horses in it even though it means not a cent to them. In fact, they seemed eager to do something to help this worthy cause along. First, sec- : and third money of the 00 purse will go. to the. American Red Cross and the jockeys will Tide in the race and will donate their services. FAVORITES FARED WELL LAST WEEK. Favorites did not fare as well during the past week as in the previous weeks of the meeting, but thus far enough of them have won to make the ereentnge of winning choices higher than usual for a winter meeting. Incidentally, the horses which came from Kentucky fell far below their average on the week, as there were several days on which they won only one race. W. C. Capps is still at the head of the list of purse-winning owners witli 3,030 to his credit. Cheer Leaders victory in the Christmas Handicap put Hardin Field in second place and the ,810 which he has won, has been won by this horse in five races. The purse money has been well divided at Jefferson Park, as twenty-two owners have won ,000 or more. Those above the ,300 mark, in addition to Capps and Field, are J. O. Talbott, .,600; W. Stormont, ,160; G. Peterson, .,850; Sam Louis. .,840 and George Chancellor, 1,810. Jockey Frank Robinson will wind up the meeting at the top of the list of winning riders. He won twenty-six races, while Albert Johnson, his nearest rival, has won only twenty-four, and the latter is done until the Fair Grounds opens, as he was suspended for the remaining day of the meeting by starter A. B. Dade yesterday. Jockey George "Walls has third placed secure with sixteen winners to his credit. Other riders who have won five or more races are: M. Garner, 10; O. "Willis, 9; J. Mooney, 13. Martin and "W. Kelsay, 0 each, and F. Keogh, 5. In addition to the Xew Years Handicap, ,500 added, to be run on the opening day of the Fair Grounds meeting, there will be another stake race run this week, it being the Gentilly Handicap, with .,000 added, for three-year-olds and over at three-quarters. It will be decided next Saturday. Entries to this stake will close on Tuesday and weights will be announced on Thursday.
