. ; 1 ! , , : A ONLY TWO NEW AMERICAN TRACK RECORDS ESTABLISHED j DURING THE RACING OF 1917 Have our Amcjcan track records, reached the mark representing the" extreme speed at which a horse can cover the various distances over which our races are run? It would appear so considering the few new records established during the past few years. During the racing of 1917 only two old records were shattered and that during a year :when the class of horses engaged in our racing was of a higher grade, especially the three-year-olds, than has been seen in action for a number of years past. The great western three-year-old, Cudgel, recently sold for over 30,000, was responsible for the new mark of 1:41 for one mile and seventy yards, made at the Latonia track on November 3. The other record was established by that sterling old campaigner, Borrow, when he ran a mile and an eighth in 1:49 at Aqueduct on June 25. At the same track a few days later Hoots, now dead, covered the same distance in the same time and thus shares with, liorrow the honor to be included in the list of horses responsible for the fastest time made at the various distances over the race courses of North America. The American track records, revised to date, are now as follows: Dist. Horse. A. Wt. Track. Date. Time. 1-4 Bob Wade 4 122 Butte. Mont August 20, 1S90 :21V 2 1-2 f Nash Cash 2 112 Charleston, S. C.
