GORDON RUSSELL IMPROVES * Changes His Style from Running Last to Finishing First. ♦ Frank Burke Takes a Race at Last — Attendance at Oaklawn Falls Off — Horses Leave. * Hot Springs. Ark.. April 1.— Gordon Russell, which n a pair of preceding starts, when ridden by Con-iclly. ran a distant last, showed sudden recovery if s] eed this afternoon under good riding by llrickson and led for the entire race to beat Kulogy ind Mary Belle. Both of these were iu rei cipt of onsiderable actual weight concession from the vinner. The race was the best programed, but was tinder claiming conditions. Another winner to shov.-mprovement during the afternoon was Frank Burke, which scored in ridiculously easy fashion iu th • fourth race, but the 1 :4*_* for the mile indicated he i oor class of starters back of him. The last race furnished the best finish of the day. Margaret N. unexpectedly winning in the last striiK-from I«-ickrosc, after seemingly being beaten. Lack rose was best, but the inexperienced Dority barely ■ult on his mount and Sande outrode him. W. C. Clancys Master Met; rath succeeded in breaking into the winning ranks in the first race, when he won after a drive to overhaul Beilloc. Hwfa. in the second race, just managed to get up in time to outstay Hazeldale. with the next four so closely ground that it required the offieial placin:: to determine the result. Jule was an easy winner in the third race and Kingfisher outstayed Pin Money iu the sixth race. Summer weather was the order today, but the -rowd showed a big decrease as a result of tie-numerous departures of racing people from here in the last forty-eight hours. W. TKAVEES CALLED TO COLORS. Hwfa ran for W. Travers this afternoon, but has been leased by R. A. Smith, along with Starfineh. Starlight and Corydon. Travers received his notification Saturday to report at once to Xew York to joiu the colors. Fight cars of horses succeeded in getting away yesterday. Those for Kentucky consisted of some owned by J. O. and G. H. Keene. Howard Oots. S. M. Henderson. H. J. Seideueck. Marshall Bros, aud G Senn. High Cost, that Kmil Her* recently purchased for a big price, was taken in charge by Henderson, to be delivered to trainer J. J. Flaui-gau on his arrival iu Louisville. The horses of K. Johnston and those of R. A. ISresler. which left for Bowie yesterday, reached St. Louis this morning, where they are being detained on account of some regulations of express trains not carrying wooden cars. The car shortage here is still acute and many of the owners are in a quandary as to how they will succeed iu transporting their horses to Kentucky and eastern points. Former jockey J. Henry was this morning held guilty of trespass and malicious mischief aud fined S-Vl and costs in a local court. This was iu connection with his alleged attempt at stuffing the nos trils of the filly Mary Belle with a sponge. The track officials will take action in the case tomorrow, it is la-lieved.
