GUY FORTUNE WORKS A FAST MILE Goes the Distance in 1:46% at Churchill Downs Derby Candidate Frcecutter in Good Work. Louisville. Ky.. April 1.— Guy Fortune, a four-year-old colt by Transvaal — Cerina. belonging to Middle ton and Jones and trained by French Brooks, worked a mile in the fastest time of the local training season when he ran the distance iu l:4t 7f at Churchill Downs Saturday morning. H«. i-ovcrcii the first three-quarters in llSTK, which time is also a new mark this spring. The colt ran like a piece of well-oiled machinery and was under restraint at all stages. Trainer Itrooks also gave Knos and Tally, his pair of Derby eligibles. some tighteuing-iip work. The first named worked a mile in l:." tl and was fresh and sound at the finish. Tally rattled off three-quarters in laajc which is her best showing of the season. Cunning Fox. from the same stable, reeled off three-quarters iii a fraction slower time. Track conditions were ideal and trainers took full advantage by sending their charges along in what were the ls-st try-outs of the season. George J. Longs D-rby eligible Freeoutter ran the best mile he has shown thus far when he covered the distance iu l:Wi. He liegau slowly, as indicated by the first half mile, which took him ."»« to cover. In the second half, however, he struck his stride and fairly flew over the ground. He showed a fine burst of speed in the final quarter, the watches catching him ia 17. which is remarkably fast for a horse traversing a mile. Owner Long was an interested sjiectator and was much gratified over the colts fine showing. Ocean Sweep, the other Derby-candidate of the Long stable, was given a strong gallop at a half mile. Several of the high-class two-year-olds iu the stable were brought out for Mr. Longs benefit and were sent a quarter in time a little slower than 23. « . i
