+- ■ -+ HORSES OF MORE OR LESS PROMINENCE IN RECENT TEARS WHICH FAILED TO APPEAR IN THE RACING OF 1917 + . __ i Donerail, the Kentucky Derby winner of 1913, is the most prominent of the horses appearing in the third installment of racers which failed to face the starter during the year 1917. Donerail furnished the racing surprise of the year 1913 when he won the Kentucky Derby, defeating Ten Point, the favorite, and running the mile and a quarter in 2:04%, a new track record for the distance. Donerail had shown nothing as a two-year-old or as a three-year-old previous to the Derby to give him any consideration in the big Kentucky race, with the result that he went to the post a neglected outsider and the few who wagered on his chances were rewarded with the handsome return of nearly 100 to 1 for every dollar wagered. Donerail was a fast horse and able to carry his speed over a considerable distance of ground. While he won several notable contests after his Derby performance. Donerail was not a consistent racer and, whereas, at times he beat horses of superior merit, he also met defeat at the hands of racers much inferior to himself. Duquesue, Dennis Stafford.
