May Hi.— The Metropolitan racing season of 191S iMgan today at Jamaica under con dition that presage sport of the highest class and prosperity even greater than was enjoyed hist year. The Paumonok Handicap, with a guaranteed value of ,000. was the opening stake feature provided by the Metroimlitan Joekey Club. R. T. Wil sons Iruturity winner Campfire. which has been training in a highly satisfactory manner all spring. 1 went to the Mist a strongly backed favorite, but after moving up in menacing fashion on the stretch turn, tired badly in the closing strides and finished third to Old Koenig and Startling. Old Koenig was his best today, followed the leader to the stretch turn, where he assumed the lead and won at his riders leisure. Startlings race was a good one. being forced wide all the way and standing severe punishment to cutlast the favorite Campfire for second place. The winners portion of the parse amounted to .S50. There was a big crowd in attendance when the bugle called the horses to the i ost in the opening race, a dash of five-eighths of a mile for two- 1 year-olds. There were several first time starters making their racing debut and keen interest was manifested in the baby racers. The winner came from a new recruit to the sport, W. Schartons IKittie Vandevcr. which formerly raced as Mrs. Kate Leydecker. leading home Sylvano and Desert, two first time starters. The filly Wheat Cakes, which ran so well at Bowie, proved liest in the second race, holding Poacher and Harry Burgoyne. most fancied by the talent, safe in a gamely contested finish. The defeat of Home Sweet Home by Lady Gertrude in the third race was a s;unner. as the Simons* colt was considered to have the race at his mercy. Lady Gertrude led all the way and won with plenty to spare r.t the finish. The unbeaten Royce Rools continued on his winning way by beating a fair band of three-year-olds in the fifth nice. Thistle was given the call in the Ntting but. while she ran a splendid race considering the interference she suffered, then- was no time at which she hud ■ chance to overtake the flying leadi r. John Sanfords home-bred Yurucari was well snp-ported in the clotting race, in which a big band of maiden two-year olds contested. This Rockton colt, however, had no chance at the start. The winner came from the stabl" of P. A. Clark, his Heno colt Lion dOr iierforniing in creditable style and winning quite easily. Todays attendance was estimated at 7.000 and it was an enthusiastic crowd of racing devotees that appeared delighted on the return of their favorite siiort. « . .
