May Ri.— Conspicuous among the Kentuckv stables that will begin the campaign of 191 S. with the opening of the Douglas Irk spriug meeting of fourteen days racing on Monday. May 27. is that of Jerome B. Respesa. Mr. Rcspcss. who long has been a prominent figure on the Kentucky turf, does not make a practice of engaging in winter racing. His horses were wintered on a fine farm of 450 acres, which he acquired not long ago at Erlanger, in Kenton County, a few miles from the Iitonia race track. Much of the property is devoted to the thoroughbred breeding stud which Mr. Resjiess established many years ago. with the renowned Dick Welles as the premier sire. Marathon is another horse that Mr. Respess used with excellent results in his breeding operations, but he no longer owns Marathon, having sold that horse to Commander .1. K. L. Ross last fall for the handsome sum of 0.IK»0. Mr. Rcspcss trains his own horses and enjoys a reputation second to none as a skillful conditioner of the racing thoroughbred. In the old days of the bookmaking regime, the men who quoted the odds invariably entertained a wholesome respect for the Respess hores. They had abundant reason to. And the Res| ess horses have been highly popular with the racegoing public since the mutiids supplanted the bookmakers on the Kentucky tracks, for they generally acquit themselves as well as exiH-cted. The Respess string has been in training at the Latonia track since early March and a division of the stable will lie shipped here shortly to take part in the racing at Douglas Park. The juvenile section of the stable will not lie as strong as in previous years, Mr. ReS|»ess having departed from his usual custom by selling all of his colts to Jefferson Livingston last summer, instead of keeping them to , carry his own colors. So he has only five two-year olds, all fillies, in training this spriug. These are: Caress, b. f. by Dick Welles— Fern L. Peachblow, b. f. by Jim Gaffney— Tillies Nightmare. Riverview. b. f. by Marathon — Europa. Sentimental, b. f, by Marathon— Animosity. Unnamed chestnut filly, by Marathon — Lass of Lungden. It is no secret that Mr. Respess thinks especially well of Seiitinieiit.il. She has been named for the imiMirtaut juvenile races at Douglas Park and La tnnia. I he older memlM rs of the IteantM stable in training at litouia include 1urdey, Gipsey George. Kuebelkamp, Pastime. Dixie Highway, Bullion, , Fleetabelle, Jiffy, Augejiue ami Prince Albert.
