CLOSE LATONIA FINISHES • Nearly Every Race Won with Difficulty by Small Margins. ♦ ■*-■ Colonel Livingston Proves Victor in the Long Established Harold Stakes. ♦ — Lntonia, Ky.. June 26. — The old established Harold Stakes, annually contested for by the best two-year-old colts and geldings in this section, was accounted for by Colonel Livingston, carrying the colors of B. J. Brannon. from Jago, with Henry Roberts in third place and St. Bernard, a stable comimnion to Colonel Livingston, in fourth place. The winners share of the stakes was ,410 net, with 00 and 00 resiiectively to second and third, the fourth horse saving his stake. The race was a gruelling one between the four leaders, the winner only winning by a scant half length, with shorter margins separating the others. Eleven started, Cncle White being an eleventh hour absentee, due to his unability to race well in the muddy going. His absence caused the Brannon entry to be outstanding favorites and they were always in the forward flight, at one stage during the stretch drive, it seemed as if they would fight out the result alone. But St. Bernard tired in the last seventy yards, enabling Jago and Henry Roberts to displace him. The Harold Stakes dates back to 1883 and has been run uninterruptedly each year since. Its interesting history since 1907 in condensed form is here presented: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1907 Tackle 105 D. Lilley. . 3.410 1:03% Difficult track conditions prevailed this afternoon, the going being rough and lumpy and suited to the more sturdier built starters. The racing, however, developed spirited contests and furnished enjoyable sport for an immense crowd. There was also an improvement in the betting action, the total handled during the afternoon being of immense proportions. In the opening race. Rose of Autumn, capably ridden by Lunsford, scored a hard fought victory when she beat Angeline by a nose. After the finish jockey Mooney, on Angeline, claimed a foul against Lunsford, alleging that Lunsford had taken hold of his saddle cloth and retarded bis mount. Lunsford disclaimed having dune so. In the second race came a thrilling finish of four, Jap winning by a nose from Christie Holters, with Bulldoze and Iwin following noses apart. The quartet began their drive in the last eighth and could not be separated until in the last stride. The third race went to Repton, which was lucky enough to shake off the others and win by half a length from Hemlock ami Jack Reeves. Petrovna was returned winner of the fourth race, but her margin was also a small one and she had to be driven hard to outstay Bribed Yoter. The necessity to substitute Barrett, with an additional five pounds, instead of Lunsford, was responsible for his defeat. J. B. GOODMAN CLAIMS BRIBED VOTEC. J. B. Goodman claimed Bribed Voter from E. R. Bradley for S2.6O0, after he ran second to Petrovna in the fourth race. Bribed Voter i-- among the foremost candidates for the Merchants- Stakes of ,500 added, to be run on Saturday next and owner Goodman undoubtedly had the winning of this race in mind, when he claimed the son of Ballot — Marie Frances. It will be recalled that Goodman claimed Gipsey George just before the running of the Quickstep Handicap at Latonia last year and won that race with him. Night Owl, an outstanding favorite, had to be ridden to his utmost to win by a scant head from Mountain Bose II.. which accompanied him practically on even terms from the start. The final race went to Dr. Levy, another favorite which just managed to outstay the extreme outsider, John Graham. Backers of favorites fared well this afternoon, most of the choices landing in advance. Jockey Garner was fined S25 by the stewards, for his failure to observe the rule, with reference to keeping his place in the line while going to the post. Jockey E Sande will resume riding tomorrow. the suspension of five days imposed upon him by the stewards for rough riding having expired. He is under engagement to ride in six of the seven races. W. J. Pulling, a stock holder in the Windsor track, was a visitor at Latonia yesterday, together with several members of the Canadian Parliament. Jockey Lunsford was struck in the eye by a clod of dirt, while riding Say When in the second race and was so painfully hurt, that his engagements to ride Friar Nought and Bribed Voter were cancelled. He recovered sufficiently to fill his remaining engagements on Kale and Rhymer. Jockey Majestic was unseated from The Grader in the third race, but escaped injury. He was forced later to discontinue riding on account of an injury to his eye while riding Diamond. Colonel Livingston, winner of the Harold Stakes, is eligible for the Valuation Stakes of ,500 added, to be run over the five and one-half furlongs course on Saturday. July 6, and for the Cincinnati Trophy of ,000 added, the richest of all western races for two-year-olds, which is scheduled to be run at Latonia on the closing day of the meeting, Saturday, July 13. Mrs. E. B. McLeans good colt Cncle White, which was withdrawn at the eleventh hour from the Harold Stakes, is eligible for the same races as the winner of the Harold. a
