STEEPLECHASE MAIN RACE « The Brook Wins Bayside Selling Stakes at Jamaica. • Sunflash n. Is Third to Damroscb and Flittergold in the Willet Handicap. ♦ Xiw York. June 26.— The Bayside Selling Steeplechase was the stake feature provided by the Queens County Jockey Club for todays racing at Aqueduct. A small but well matched field of jumpers furnished tin- contention in this event, with T. J. Dnnohucs- The I.rook going to the post the choice over Syosset and Reddest, most fancied of the oilier starters. The Brook never cave his backers an anxious moment, as he quickly raced to the front and. fencing faultlessly, led all the way to win by six lengths. Syossct was easily liest, but Ueddests race was much below his true form. This was the fifth running of the Bayside Selling Steeplechase, the brief history of which is as follows: Yea-. Wimior. A.Wt Joek y. Yal. Time. 1907 Jimmy Lane... 7 163 Owens ,015 4.:«i I90« Percentage 4 130 Mclnerney . 930 4:32 lllHi AImIoii fi llfll H. Haynes.. «75 4 :25 1917 Shannon River. .9 141 W. In the Willet Handi-cap. tic main race of the day on the flat, was a severe blow to the talent, who pinned their faith on the Lcary racer and eonsidereil him much the iK-st of those opiHised to him. despite the big weight concessions he was making tJ those reckoned to have a chance. Kuaflasli II. ran a game race, but his heavy im|Mtst evidently told on him, as he failed to gain on Ihe leaders in the final struggle. The suddenly improved Damrosch. under Lykes masterful ride, was an easy winner, although the finish might have been closer had not Flittergold. which ran a splendid race, met interference at the eight h I»ost, when running fastest of all. It was a fast run race, time for the mile lieing 1:38%. Midnight Sun proved himself to be a shiftv three-year-old plater, by decisively heating a bij; baud of useful racers ii: the opening race of the day. He came around the leaders after going a half and, overtaking the leader in the last sixteenth, out gamed him at the end. ANSWERS THE QUESTION FIEST ASKING. The finish of the third race found three first-time starters leading the others home. Questionnaire, from the stable of Ed Arlington, was the winner. with Andrew Millers Hurricane second and J. E. Maddens Toto in third place. Questionnaire was easily best and may lie a good one. Arlington purchased this colt from the estate of the late S. L. Parsons, together with Koh-i-Noor. He paid 34,500 for both. Questionnaire, as a yearling, cost Mr. Parsons ,7 m. Another surprise for the form backers was the easy victory of Kewpie ONoil over Deckmutc and Kllisou, the two most fancied in the ra -e. Kewpie ONoil displayed a high order of speed throughout ami led all the way by a comfortable margin. Ellisons defeat was attributed to the poor ride he received and the consensus of opinion was that with a competent rider in the saddle, he would have won easily. The Quinoj- Stables Elmeudorf, a son of Ballot, graduated from the maiden class, when he beat a big band of horses, mostly three-year-olds which have not as yet earned brackets, in the closing race of the day. Elmendorf was well ridden and kept in reserve until entering the stretch, where he challenged the leader. Porte Drapcau, and disposed of him in the final drive. Jockey Mot; raw was susjteiided for three days by the stewards for crossing with War Zone in front of the others in the tanarsie Stakes on Tuesday. His action eliminated the well-fancied Lion dOr from contention. Ex -jockey Willie Martin, of Hamilton, Out., was an arrival today. All the stakes to lie run at the fall meeting at Belmont Park have lieen increased in value. Secretary Earlooker announces that the estimated value of the years running of the Futurity will be 5,000, which is an increase of about 4,000 over last years prize. The localization this year will run to about 0,000. A new stake for two-year-old fillies has been arranged to be known as the Tom Boy. It will have a guaranteed value of ,500. and the distance will be five and a half furlongs.
