ColeSaratoga Saratoga Springs X Y July 31 If there is any disappointment over the card for the opening day of Hie Saratoga meeting it is the size of the field for the 7000 Saratoga Handicap the principal attrac ¬ tion of the day However what it lacks in numbers is more than counterbalanced by the quality of those nnined to start A race with Cudgel Koimer and AVar Cloud as contestants would in itself be suf ¬ ficient to satisfy the most exacting Cudgel is the top weight ami will without doubt go to the post the favorite Koamcr one of the most popular racers of the metropolitan turf will not want for admirers and there are many who exyect to see Andrew Millers great gelding lower the colors of Cudgel and A K Macombers brilliant threeyear old War Cloud The latter is not being overlooked l ut most critics are skeptical as to his ability to triumph over two such redoubtable rscars as Cudgel and Iloamer IloamerProbably Probably the best band of twoyearolds that have met this year will clash in the Flash Stakes the juvenile feature of tlic day Sixteen youngsters with vxeellent racing credentials make up the field Pass ¬ ing Shower Lady Rosebud High Time My Friend jmd Sea Pirate are the most prominent of the eastern delegation while Billy Kelly and Believe Me Girls are the best of the Kentucky contingent The large size of the field and the uncertainty of the two yearold division thus far this year makes this juito an open race with the result that favoritism will lie divided It should be a wonderful race and worthy of the best traditions of this old established fixture fixtureThe The Shillelah Steeplechase with such crack Junip ¬ ers as The Brook and Belle of ISryn Mawr among the contestants will furnish the devotees of the sport through the
