MORE TIME TO DEVOTE TO RACING That Is Why John E Madden Decided to Retire From tho Breeding End of the Sport SportSaratoga Saratoga N Y July 31 Why are you giving up breeding thoroughbreds This question was put to John E Madden and his reply was sudden and particularly pointed pointedBecause Because I am better off than John D Rocke ¬ feller was his answer I have everything I want from money to a good appetite From now on I am a fanner and an owner and trainer of horses I shall always have a stable of horses to race but it is doubtful if I return to breeding breedingHamburg Hamburg Place is now a big farm on which 1 shall raise cattle and sheep I now have 500 sheep and I really dont know how many head of cattle 1m t the number is quite large At the prcsont time I have 500 acres of wheat and 400 acres of corn besides many acres of other farm products as well as hundreds of acres of blue grass I am giving up breeding thoroughbreds localise it has boon a de ¬ cided strain on me for tlboiit twentyfive years and having enough money to retire I decided to do so but I shall always be associated with the turf as long as I can get around buying horses when I think they are good enough and winning stakes as I have always done I have not bred all the good horses that I have raced having bought many including Novelty Yankee Blue Girl Salvadere and many others of more or less importance and all of which won rich stakes for me My colors will always be carried by highclass horses if I can get them but it is doubt ¬ ful if I ever breed any more moreMr Mr Madden is an exceedingly interesting conver ¬ sationalist when the subject is the turf He has soon all phases of it and lias proved exceedingly successful on account of his untiring efforts and foresight When the days were dark for the con ¬ tinuation of the sport in this country Mr Madden was one of the most optimistic horsemen He never gave up the ghost On the contrary he bought ex ¬ tensively and continued to breed believing that the popularity of the turf would eventually triumph triumphHAMBURG HAMBURG PLACE IS CAPACIOUS CAPACIOUSIt It is safe to say that Hamburg Place is the larg ¬ est breeding establishment in the world there being no other similar institution of its equal in any country From his farm lie has introduced such horses as Sir Martin Old Rosebud Little Nephew Joe Madden and scores of others of more or less note He has endeavored to raise the best horses in tliis country and lias studied the breeding ques ¬ tion for generations back He wrote an interesting volume on the subject which has a wide circula ¬ tion in every country where the breeding industry exists The beauty and interest in breeding thorough ¬ breds is the uncertainty attached to them says Mr Madden Look at the highclass horses that have been bought for a song There is Morello which was purchased for 100 Then again there is Heno which only brought 100 These instances demonstrate that in breeding and buying yearlings there is such an uncertain element that the poorest man can sometimes amass a fortune from the small ¬ est investment If there was no uncertainty about buying young horses money would dominate as tin rich would get every good horse and the poor man would not have a chance As it is the poor man or moderate buyer has a chance to get a good horse for a small sum and what is more encouraging when a man lias a good horse it cannot be squeezed from him by the money pressure He gets his price for his goods or lie keeps them themEven Even this year the richest owners on the turf scoured the farms in Kentucky Tennessee Mary ¬ land and Virginia for the best horses yet the ma ¬ jority of the really good twoyearolds are in the bauds of men of moderate means Stables like those of Joseph K Widener George D Wldcner Maj August Behmmt A K Maeemiber R T Wilson and W S Kilmer liive not yet shown a twoyearold that lias come near to expectations expectationsII II K Knapp and W R Coe have Elfin Queen and Terentia respectively which look like the best fillies All the cither good twoyearolds are in Un ¬ hands of middle class horsemen No better proof could be offered to establish my contention We are going to breed some wonderful horses in this coun ¬ try Of that there is little question for the stock is hero I shall endeavor to spread my stallions and mares around among many people so that the indus ¬ try will be more widely circulated and to encourage iow blood into the subject of breeding breedingMr Mr Maddons success on tho turf has frequently been a subject of discussion among horsemen Simon Healys answer is probably the most truthful and impressive when he says Madden made a success because he worked hard and unceasingly He would have been just as successful had he turned his tal rnts in any other direction Had he been a thimble1 inaker lie would have put more dents into a thimble thaii his neighboring mechanics
