WESTERN TWOYEAROLDS OF THIS YEAR Kono Definitely Outstanding as Superior in Speed and Stamina in Meetings Past When in any year a really highclass twoyear old makes its appearance in racing one of the evi ¬ dences of its greatness is its ability to successfully concede imiclfweTgliT to fairly good liorses of its own age Judging by this test no exceptionally good twoyearold took part in the Kentucky racing of this year and in the east only Elfin Queen seems to meet all requirements It is true that she failed to give Terentia fourteen pounds in the Astoria Stakes and at that difference in weight was beaten a half length by the latter but time may establish the fact that Tereutia is the best of Mr Coes costly Sledmere Stud fillies and a highclass one herself herselfOf Of the western twoyearolds Billy Kelly seemed quite an invincible for a time This undeniably fleet sou of Dick Welles won his first four races In irreproachable style and in them made a show of such as Colonel Livingston Col Taylor Henry Roberts Mack Garner Jago Docod Ceriuus Gin ¬ ger Major Parke and others representing winning form But the first time he was asked to take up 121 pounds and give away ten or more pounds to each of his competitors he failed lamentably This was in the Spring Trial Stakes at Douglas Park June 8 Coupled with Henry Roberts he was a 120100 favorite but brought up in the rear divi ¬ sion Sennings Park winning by a head from Colo ¬ nel Livingston with St Bernard third In behalf of Billy Kelly it was afterwards said that he had been injured in the race and color was lent to this statement by the fact that he was not afterwards started He may redeem himself at Saratoga SaratogaAVith AVith the disappearance of ISilly Kelly went any pretention to outstanding superiority on the part of any Uvoyearold engaged in western racing The best of them beat each other in turn with confusing regularity Perhaps an exception should be noted in favor of K R Bradleys Binding Tie This filly was started in but two races and won them both a purse race and the Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs In the Juvenile she easily defeated Legal Si pounds Semiings Park 114 Brother Maclean 97 Jago 112 Effie Randall 97 and Gold Stone 100 In carrying 112 pounds herself she was giving weight to everything else in the race and this per ¬ formance was a good one But she was not started again In passing it might be said that in this filly Batter Cake Believe Me Girls Blushing Beauty and several more of little less merit Brad ¬ ley possessed the best band of twoyearolds in Kentucky racing which may not be saying any great tiling tilingOf Of the others Sennings Park Regalo Colonel Livingston Col Taylor Col AVhite Major Parke Linden St Bernard Madras Madge I Galli Curci AVoodpile By Heck AVar Slusit Jap Docod and a few more which did well at time and won races but they were all in a heap Of course it is too early to pass definite opinion and it may well be that autumn racing to come will present some of these youngsters in an entirely different light
