THRIFT IN TRAVELING The thought and ingenuity devoted to getting ahead of the railroads under the old rates cen ¬ tered on more productive ends would have added materially to the prosperity of the schemers The new McAdoo rates have greatly broadened and in ¬ tensified the desire to travel as cheaply as possible The threecentsaniile rate was accepted with com ¬ paratively little grumbling as a war necessity but the extra charge of a half cent a mile for parlor and sleeping car privileges has been a sore point A great many persons got even by traveling in coaches Others began figuring ways to get around the extra charge Between Chicago and New York and vice versa regular travelers get off at Pitts ¬ burgh or Buffalo go to a hotel and resume their journey in a day coach in the meriting saving it is computed an average of 8 on the trip The coach fare one way is 942 The extra fare for using the sleeper is about S5 and the sleeper costs another 1 making the fare 3981 Others travel in a day coach waiting until night to buy a berth and saving approximately 050 on a trip Between Chicago and the Pacific Coast getting off the train for three nights is figured u saving of 18 on the journey journeyParlor Parlor car travel has already been cut heavily by the higher rates The Itailroad Administration in this matter may discover that it has overreached itself The public is willing to pay a reasonable advance if shown the necessity but is prompt to protect itself against those it considers unreasonable particularly when it can figure out means of doing without or getting around the regulations even if it does entail a little inconvenience and delay Pittsburgh Dispatch
