ENGLISH STUD BOOK REVELATIONS REVELATIONSThis This great work which no bloodstock breeder can possibly do without is at once a monument to the industry of Messrs Wcathcrby and of their print ¬ ers and bookbinders for in these latter days it is far from enough to get a work ready for the press The further work involves almost equal trouble and difficulty However the twentythird volume is now available and it is bigger than any of its pred ¬ ecessors for the mares accounted for in it number 430 for 191i as against 5 30 in 1913 This in ¬ crease is due in some measure to tho stoppage of the continental demand though the export of year ¬ lings and racing stock to America and the colonies has increased Apart from that however in all the departments where the war has made itself felt there is a clear indication from the figurps Thus of the 0430 mares accounted for we find no fewer than 338 under the heading No return or put out of the stud whereas under this head ¬ ing in 1913 there were but 123 and in 1914 only ninetytwo Again there were In 191C as many as 231 not covered in preceding year which is in excess of the earlier years Died since preceding year total 323 in 191fi as against 227 In 1913 and 131 in 1914 On the whole therefore the sum total of 0430 mares accounted for does not mean for a moment that breeders were doing increased business but rather that they were having increased diffi ¬ culties The actual return of foals born in 1910 exceeds only by two those born in 1915 Consider ¬ ing the difficulties of shipping 127 exports of mares is quite a favorable return and it may be all for the bust that we have been obliged to keep so many mares at home because after the war there is bound to bo a great demand for breeding stock Anyone who wishes to have the Stud Book Vol 23 with the Bruce Lowe figures added to each mare has only to apply to the International Horse Agency and Exchange Ltd 40a Pall Mall or they can send their own books up to be figured It is a great convenience to have these figures in the book for ready reference whatever value we may happen to attach to Bruce Lowes own deductions from them Tims I hear that the threeyearold Country Bncli has been sold to Edward Naiighton of Perth Western Australia and a big fine colt he is though he was much delayed in possible work by a bad accident early this year Well the colt being by Swynford Valve reference to the figured Stud Book shows that Valve is of No 1 family as for that matter is Swynford It is a great branch of No 1 family for Valve is out of Gas dam of Cicero her dam Illuminate dam of Ladas Swynford as most of us know is out of Canterbury Pilgrim winner of the Oaks her dam Pilgrimage winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Oaks and dam of many great winners Here then is an extraordinary conjunction of notable lines of No 1 blood and Country Buck should certainly make his mark in Australia where the outside figures through Sylvia 13 and Frailty 18 are so well represented W Allison in London Sportsman
