ONEr OF AMERICAS GREATEST RACERS Henry of Navarres Notahlo Career and Memorable Triumphs on the Turf Byron McClelland brought to the races at the St Louis Fair Grounds in the spring of 1893 a colt that was destined to makchis mark as a horse of great speed and stamina among tlie topnotchers of metropolitan racing That colt was Henry of Na ¬ varre He started but twice in the west as a two yearold being unplaced in his first attempt at the Fair Grounds and winning his next tlie Breeders Stakesat Lexington on a heavy track from La Joya and Lazzarone LazzaroneOn On juiy 05 Henry of Navarre made his debut in the east at Monmouth Park being defeated in the Sapling Stakes by Senator Grady and Hyder Abad In his next essay he was again beaten by Senator Grhily in the Select Stakes at the same course His next start was in the Junior Champion Stakes in which Senator Grady for the third time took his measure he finishing third a neck behind Horn ¬ pipe Henry of Navarre triumphed over hjs op p6riehts in his remaining five races of the year among his victories being the Golden Rod Stakes at Coney Island on September 1 and the Dasli Stakes the next day He was given a few weeks rest when he was taken to Gravesend where he annexed the Algeria jStakes defeating such good onesrj onesrjas as Dobbins and Ornus among others This was his last start as a twoyearqjfl twoyearqjflOn On May 15 1894 Henry of Navarre demonstrated his staying qualities when he finished second to Dr Rice in the Brooklyn Handicap a remarkable nice for a threeyearold at that time of the year and tlie first one of that age to finish among the placed horses in that event His next start was in the Standard Stakes where he was defeated by Don Alonzo the only other starter John Cooper took his measure in the Fort Hamilton Stakes he carrying 121 pounds to the formers 110 110In In the rich Metropolitan Handicap at Morris Park Henry of Navarre again suffered defeat this time finishing third to Ramapo and Roche two high class raters Dr Rice the Brooklyn Handicap win ¬ ner finishing far back Then came the Belmoht Stakes in winch at the prohibitive odds of 1 to iO Henry of Navarre triumphed over Prig and Assignee winning in a canter arid netting his owner 6680 After showing much speed for a major pijrt of the journey he finished fifth in the Suburban Ramapo winning Banquet Sport and King Lee being the others to lead him home At Shcepshead Bay three races fell to his lot two purses and the Spindrift Stakes in which he de ¬ feated Dorian and two others othersSEVEN SEVEN STRAIGHT WINS AT SARATOGA SARATOGATaken Taken to Saratoga Henry of Navarre started on a career which gained him seven straight races among them beiiig the Travers Stakes The Fox hall Stakes in which lie defeated John Cooper and Rey el Santa Anita funning the mile and an eighth in l534t and tlie Iroquois Stakes in which he defeated his old conqueror Senator Grady GradyStarting Starting at Sheepshead Bay in the fall lie won the Dolnhin Stakes and Bay Stakes the hitter from such grand racers as Banquet Yo Tambien and Sir Walter Then came that memorable race for the Third Special in which he ran a dead heat witli the mighty Domino the money being divided Start ¬ ing as a 2 to 5 favorite In the Second Special he was defeated by a nose by Clifford his only other opnonent Ln o spectacular race His last start of the year was ii threecornered special against Clifford and Domirio lie being victorious by three quarters of a lengthj Clifford finishing second and Domino third In all this year Henry of Navarre won the tidy sum of 32675 32675McClelland McClelland brought TKnry of Navarre west again in the spring of 1895 and won the Merchants Stakes the Country Club Stakes and two purses at Latonia He was ben taken east and finished second to Rey el Santa Anita in the Twin City Handicap He won five but of his next six starts among them being tlie First Special defeating Clifford Sir Walter and Domino One of his most notable performances was when he defeated Counter Tenor Sir Walter and Galilee in the Manhattan Handicap at Morris Park over a sloppy track run ¬ ning the mile and a quarter in 207 His last race of the year was in the Municipal Handicap whore lie scored over Rey el Santa Anita and Clif ¬ ford carrying the heavy impost of 130 pounds poundsHenry Henry of Navarre started but twice as a fiveyear old winning on both occasions his first being a purse at Morris Park bvei the Withers niile and his last tlie rich Suburban where he triumphed over The Commoner Clifford and others Tunning the mile and a quarter 207 with 129 pounds up upFollowing Following is a table of the races run and money won by this good son of Knight of Ellerslie EllerslieHenry Henry of JTavarre ch h 1891 by Knight of Eilorslip Moss Rose Year Age Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won 1893 2 10 6 1 21 10685 1894 3 20 13 5 1 1 32675 1895 4 10 8 1 1 0 14215 1896 5 2 2 0 0 0 235 Totals 4 42 29
