CATCHING THE CUNNING COYOTE Wyoriiing is a great country for trapping We have lots of coyotes weasel inuskrat and badger a few mink bobcats and wolves and in the moun ¬ tains also bear mountain lion marten fox and lynx I am trapping coyotes for a sheep man and am having pretty good luck The biggest nights catch was three coyotes but of course there are nights when I dont get any anyI I use bait in the winter aud scent in the fall and spring For bait I use horse cow or sheep but sometimes I use rabbit and chicken I generally make several baits out of a horse or cow and scat ¬ ter them out and put my traps at them but when I dont cut a big bait up I let the coyotes eat on it before I put my traps at it as they are not so leary of it then Last spring I dug out two litters of young coyotes six in one den and four in the other but I didnt get either of the old ones onesLast Last summer a friend of mine started after a young coyote to rope him When he threw the rope it went a little past the coyote but the coy ¬ ote ran right into the loop aud the fellow pulled on the rope and had him He took him home and had him tied up for several weeks when one day it broke loose and left forgetting to come back One day when I went to my traps I had a ferret which is the second one that was ever seen in tills coun ¬ try The mink in this country are not hard to catch and I feel safe in saying that onethird of them are caught in muskrat sets as there is a good deal of muskrat trapping done along the creeks and sloughs There is seldom any bear killed in this country but every once In a while during the summer one raids a sheep camp tearing the tent all to ribbons and eating all the syrup jam bacon arid tin like then SIPS how much lie can destroy One fellow told me that one came to his camp and ate a case of eggs but Ill lot you judge for your ¬ self whether ft is true or not For a coyote gun I have n 32 special Winchester card cardtie tie which is a good gnn bnt I think something on the order of a 22 high power would be better us the lead travels much faster George Fryer Wyoming in Hunter TruderTrappcr
