A K MACOMBER A REAL SPORTSMAN Races for Love of the Sport and Not for Gain His Turf Expenditures Lavish New York November 1C A K Macombers announcement that lie will continue racing was probably the most acceptable news that has been handed around since the meetings closed in this section Mr Macoinber is one of the most de sirable men in turf affairs not only for his interest in racing but for its conduct He was lavish in his expenditures to gather a good stable of horses and is desirous of winning every stake at sonie time or other that is offered by American associations To attain this end his purchases are unlimited as evidenced by his buying the best obtainable in European countries as well as do ¬ mestic product His instructions to his trainer Walter Jennings are sometimes appalling We want the best of evervthing if it can be procured is what he says to liis trainer This not only applied to horses but to all things appertaining thereto hen he ordered his stable built at Belmont Park there were no specific orders excepting to get the best These buildings cost 30000 up to the time Mr Macomber saw them then he added 10000 in more improvements All this property will re ¬ vert to the Westchester Racing Association in a few years and lie will have to pay rent for the buildings the same as other owners ownersIn In the matter of making stake entries Mr Ma comber ordered trainer Jennings to enter everything in the stable especially in the twoyearold division in case there might be one left out that would develop into a good horse which sometimes happens It would be disappointing to Mr Macomber to have a good horse in his stable that had been left out of the stake features This is a spirit of enterprise that speaks quite plainly that Mr Macomber is racing for the love of the sport more than financial remuneration remunerationMr Mr Macomber will start the season next year with between thirty and forty horses including those now racing in Kentucky The recent sale of War Pennant will deprive the stable of a threeyearold of prominence if not the best for there are many who believe War Pennant the superior of Hilly Kelly or Eternal Since Mr Macomber has decided to return to the turf Mr Jennings has many times expressed his disappointment at having parted with War Pennant to Commander J K L Ross RossFrom From the looks of things there will be great rivalry between the Hoss and Macomber stables as they will be about the dominating establishments At the present writing Commander Ross lias the bulge on Mr Macoinber having such stars as Billy Kelly War Pennant Milkmaid and other coming threeyearolds and a numixr of good horses in other divisions including the mighty Cudgel War Cloud is the only horse of prominence in the Ma ¬ comber stable at present It was first intended to retire War Cloud but now that the Macoinber colors are again to be seen in public it is probable lie will be trained next year
