J WHALEN TO TRAIN PUBLIC STABLE Contract with James Butler Expires Several Offers Hade for His Services NEW YORK December 11 John Whaleu who has had charge of James Butlers stable during the season of 1918 will become a public trainer It is his intention to gather up a few horses as opportunity offers to form a stable for himself as well as accepting a few horses for men who have not sufficient racing material to engage a trainer for themselves My contnict expired with Mr Butler said Mr Whalcu and the best way to break into the business again is to get a few horses of my own I shall take a run down to Kentucky after thfc holidays and sen if I cannot pick up one or two selling platers for myself Several offers have been made to nus to take horses and these I shall consider after I have started my own stable stableMr Mr Butler happened to have a had baud of horses this year I wanted him to stsll several of his string early in the spring but he thought they might improve and win some races Even the good horse Spur faiUd to live up to his earlier form Mr Butler has about a dozen yearlings at his Eastviow Farm all of his own breeding being by Out of Reach Some of them look mighty promis ¬ ing and I sincerely hope they turn out well At present the only two horses Mr Itntlur has which will be raced next year are Spur and Turf so he will practically start the 1919 season with a new sot of twoyearolds anil it will not surprise me to see some of them stake winners winnersOut Out of Reach died last year but he has left some good horses to carry his strain for the next two or three generations principal of which is John Sanfords George Smith which was recently retired to the stud and is now located ia Kentucky Out of Reach sired some good horses in his1 career horses that were more than what is termed useful usefulOLD OLD BOOKMAKER STILL INTERESTED INTERESTEDGeorge George Wheelock can be seen strolling down Fifth avenue every fine afternoon He will not go away this winter his business in real estate affairs being too strenuous for his absence from the city for any length of time I dont warit any win ¬ ter racing said Mr Wheelock but in the sum ¬ mer time there is nothing so invigorating or health preserving M a trll to tlll IxS Island tracks evcrv day and a month in Saratoga During the winter however I have to watch the real estate market pretty closely as I am the chairman of the Law and Legislative Committee of the United Real Estate Owners Association of which there are nearlv 10000 members The position keeps my mind well occupied hence 1 rarely look over the entries But wait until the spring comes around again and Ill be on hand buttling with those boys who lay layMr Mr Wheelock was one of the old school of book ¬ makers and prominent in days gone After that Wheelock folded up his tent and camp stool and retired He went abroad for a time and returned satisfied that the foreign winners were harder to pick than they were here The United States is go l enough for him he now declares declaresAnother Another oldtimer who really looks younger than he did ten years ago is David Gideon who can talk about American racing for the past forty years with as much accuracy and knowledge as if some of thft events he siwnks of only occurred yes ¬ terday Guess this reason I look so good said Mr Gideon as ho chatted with a group of friends in the Waldorf is because I have just been clipped and groomed I need my hair clipping once in a while and am not like some of you baldheaded youngsters who can get your hair trimmed with your hat on In reference to winter sport Mr Gideon said he would leave for New Orleans on Saturday December 28 and would be there in time for New Years Day opening at the Fair Grounds I like to l e with the racers all the time winter and summer They are part of my life and I feel like old Charley Reed felt when he packed his grip fur Russia some years ago Old Charley snid This idea of having only six races a day doesnt suit me 1 want some action and thats why I am going to Russia where they start racing early in the morning and keep at it until dark The old gentleman Avas a real sportsman
