ADIRONDACK HUNTING OF 1918 Peer Kill Was Small but Bucks Were Big Four Ken Are Victims NEW YORK December 11 The Adirondack kill of buck deer this season was notable in the heavy weights of animals brought down and in the spread of antlers df many heads obtained Bucks of 200 pounds in weight were brought into Saranac Lake and other centers The buck which won the Dr Francis L Trudeau cup weighed 212 pounds It was dropped after nine shots had been fired into it by Miles Gantwell of Malone N Y YAmong Among other bucks entered in the Trudeau cup contest were some that weighed 190 196 201 and 207 pounds It was a condition of the contest that the deer should be hog dressed and entered thus whole wholeIt It was tins condition which prevented Arthur Woods who killed a buck of 250 pounds in weight in the Raquette River region from entering his prize as he was obliged to cut the deer up into quarters to get it out of the forest James Hodges of Glen Valley of the Keene Valley district killed a buck which weighed something more than 250 pounds but he did not enter it In the Trudeau cup event Some of the bucks had antlers of ten twelve fifteen seventeen and eighteen points Perhaps the most remarkable kill of the season was made at Beaver River It was a doe with ant ¬ lers worthy of a fine buck The doe had a head of eight points and was a most interesting exhibit exhibitFour Four men were shot in mistake for deer and one of them died There were a number of minor in ¬ juries due to the accidental discharge of firearms But the most regrettable circumstance was the shooting of Henry Thwaits of Ausable Forks by Daniel Seckington a game warden wardenThwaits Thwaits was called upon to show his hunting li ¬ cense and in the misunderstanding which followed tlie warden fired a shot which shattered Thwait s leg It is charged tiiat the warden shot a soft nose or dumdum bullet bulletThwaits Thwaits lost his leg and the excitement m his home town ran high Seckington the warden who resigned his office was arrested and held to await the action of the grand jury of Essex County under bail in the amout of 2000 2000The The kill of game included many bears a number of lynx and a great many foxes Grouse were by common impulse left alone that they may increase in numbers but the drain upon all game and birds especially from the viewpoint of food supply as compared to the quantities of fish taken during the summer was light
