PAPP A PUZZLE TO TRAINER HIRSCH Futurity Winner of 1917 Proves a Disappointment as Three Year Old Hope for Canadian Racing NEW YORK DecemlHr 11 Max Ilirsch the successful trainer of exCongressnian Lofts horses has settled down in his winter charters at Bel mont Park and will remain there until next spring I may run down tj Cuba said Mr Ilirsch but it will not be until after the holidays and then only for a brief stay just to look over the horses Congressman Loft has there I dont think any of them will start before the new year as they needed a rest and they must be acclimated before being sent to the post The horses I have at Bel mont are all in pretty good condition though some of them have had a touch of the skin disease that has been prevalent around the Long Island tracks for the past week or two Many of the stables have been affected but it was nothing serious and it is now subsiding in fact all those in my stable are over it itIn In speaking of his highclass twoyearold but a disappointment as a threeyearold meaning the colt Papp Mr Ilirsch said he did not know just what to say about him In the spring of last year Papp looked and acted as if he was going to be the horse of the year What happened to him I really could not say He had a slight sickness and seemed to by all right after recovery but he never was able to run afterward The horse looks well enough anil he may come back next year and show some of his early form I just cannot say any ¬ thing about him but I surely hope for his improve nient as he is a mighty fine horse when at his best At present we are just all resting up the horses and myself but after New Years we will be up and at em again and if Papp onlv gathers himself together Ill have a pretty good string of horses to begin the 1919 season seasonOne One of tlie distinguished visitors in town lust week was George ONeill i great frvul of racing and who now has charge of three Canadian hotels in Toronto Hamilton and London Being in close touch with many of the prominent and influential men of the Dominion m spokp on thf Canadian situation at some length the sum and substance of which was that favorable action wcuM no doubt b taken regarding racing next year in Canada but could not say how it would be governed It is almost a sure thing racing will be resumed next year saiil Mr ONeill and believe me it will be welcome to the business people as well ts to those who enjoy the sport It canaot come too soon for Toronto and little old Hamilton
