FISH AND GAME LEGISLATION Discretionary Powers of Authorities Being Icreased in Various States WASHINGTON D C December 11 More and more the state legislatures are giving to their fish and game commissions discretionary powers powersWashington Washington gives the commission the power to close any lakes or stream for fishing Oregon to close or suspend the open season for the taking of game and fish at will and Nevada commissioners can change the open season on many different species of game gameMichigan Michigan gives power to suspend abridge or regu ¬ late onen seasons on any kind of game or fur bear ¬ ing animal or game birds in a wild state in any designated area where it becomes necessary to assist in the increase of better protection of any particular kind or species of such game gameIn In Pennsylvania the governor has authority through proclamation to close for a period not ex ¬ ceeding one season at one time any county or coun ¬ ties or any section of any county to either fishing or hunting or to close any stream or part of streams to fishing because of excessive drought and consequent danger from forest fires low water and the presence of contagious or infectious di ¬ seases when such action may be necessary to con ¬ serve either the health or welfare of our people or our natural resources resourcesThe The state game warden of Arizona is given power to suspend the open season on any kind of game in any i designated area where in his judgment it becomes necessary for the protection of any par ¬ ticular kind or species of game threatened with ex ¬ termination terminationWhen When further protection is desired for fish or game in New York a petition must be filed with the Conservation Commission signed by ten or more citizens following which a public hearing is given and the commissioner has the power to regulate or prohibit the taking of such species of fish and game Maine also enjoys the public hearing statute
