; j THIRTY LEADING MONEY- WINNING HORSES OF 1918 WHICH RACED IN GOOD FORM AS SIX -YEAR -OLDS OR OVER A thoroughbred which has been actively engaged in racing from its two-year-old days until it is a six-year-old is, as a rule, on the down grade in respect to speed and usefulness on the turf. While this holds, good as to the- great majority, there are hardy and honorable exceptions in the way of horses which continue to race admirably at the age of six or older. A number of such horses were popular in our racing of 1918, with Reamer the bright particular star. This seven-year-old gelding is the Dean Swift of American racing and never raced with greater speed and general distinction. Even if he had done no more than make his now celebrated mile in 1:31 against Salvators record of 1:35, that would have been enougli to maintain his place in the affection of racegoers. Rut lie did much more than that and in winning 1,950 in combat with the best horses of the year recorded a remarkable feat in that way. However, Roamer was not the only old-timer still spry on his feet. Hauberk, while furnishing disappointments at times, ran sufficiently well to win more money than in any other year of his career. Leochares showed much of the electric speed which has distinguished him since his advent in racing and is probably good for much service yet, apparently. Rancher was a high-class handicap horse, as in his previous years. Hank ODay rail some extra good races when he had raced into good form. Rrndleys Choice was a hard horse to beat in any company and won seven of his ten races. Two excellent selling platers. Senator James and Clark M.. each won twelve races, and another in Obolus won ten. The oldest horse in this list the teii-year-old Col. Marchniont took nine, some o"f them in fast time; Others in the following list of thirty gave their backers good reason for kindly remembrance from time to time: Horse. Col. Sex. Age. redigree.
