FROM THE PLOW TO THE RACE TRACK Reversing the Usual Order of Tilings, Sophia K. Will Soon Make Her Debut on the Turf, NEW ORLEANS, La.. January 24. Whether a thoroughbred which lias never been tested in a race can be taken from a plow to a race track and developed into a winner is an experiment which is being tried by O. L. Foster, trainer for W. F. Knebelkamp, chief owner of the Louisville Raseball Club. Recently Foster had shipped from Waldeck Farm near Louisville to the Fair Grounds the four-year-old filly Sophia K. for the purpose of placing her in training. Prior to coming here the fillv had never been on a race track, and it was only a. short time ago that her owner decided to register a name for her. She is by King Olympia Mav-dine, and was bred by the late W. F. Schulte aiid broken by Jim Everman. Rut neither men could see much hope for her in a racing way, and she found her way back to the Waldeck Farm, where she was put to the useful occupation of dragging a plow. She was given plenty of work, and now after two years she is removed from the peaceful life of the farm to the more exciting scenes of the race track. Trainer Foster is confident the filly will make good, and lie is going to give her a chance in the near future to show what she has in her in the way of speed and endurance in a race. There is no ques"-tion regarding her endurance in a plow, and that may go a long way toward helping her staying qualities in a contest with other horses. Any number of horses have been consigned to the more ardufius work of the farm after their usefulness as racers had terminated, but it is indeed seldom that one graduates from the farm and enters upon a new career on the race track.
