OMAR KHAYYAMS INFIRMITY LAST YEAR Why Omar Khayyam was a failure in racing last year is told intelligently by an admirer of the horse in the following enlightening communication from Baltimore: "So much has been written concerning Omar Khayyam relative to his disappointing form in 101S that I am certainly surprised at some turf writers who, knowing the facts, do not explain his poor form of 1018. Omar Khayyam develoned n quarter crack early in the year, and he was trained and raced much too early after this happened for him to show even sellinir plater form; with one-third of his hoof cut away. It certainly hurt him in galloping, and mut,h more in racing, and as it takes months to grow a new hoof it was a wonder that he stood tills without breaking down. It is absolutely impossible for a horse with u quarter crack to extend himself. No amount of bar plates, leather boots, or any contrivance will ease the strain on such a tender Injury, and no horse, no matter how game, will put that foot down with any confidence. It was ii shame to race this horse under big weights over Hard tracks with such ah infirmity. No doubt 1010 will prove riiv contention. and he no doubt will show- he is the same old Omar."
