Unexpected and Long - Priced Winners of 1918 It always makes a stir among followers of racing when some horse, practically unconsidered in the betting, gallops home first witli a ,long price against it. At the present time track speculation is by the pari-mutuel system on all tracks except in the case of the tracks in the states of New York and Louisiana. It results that nearly all of the cases of big prices against successful horses occur in the mutuels. The best price of the year 1918 was recorded when Roaring Gulch won at Cheyenne, August 21, and paid Ills backers at the rate of 215 to 1. No other horse won at as great odds as 200 to 1, the nearest approach to it being Little Biggers 187 to 1 at Lexington, April 29. Four other horses paid better than 100 to 1. In oral betting the leading prices were 50 to 1 each against F. C. Cole at the New Orleans Fair Grounds track, January 25, and Lucky Lady, at Kmpire City, July 20. The horses which in the course of the years racing won at 40 to 1 or better were the following: Owner. Horse. Track. Date. Odds. H. T. Batchler Jessie Louise Fair Grounds, N. O January 1 40-1 E. C.
