LATONIAS STAKE EVENTS Old Features Retained, but Values Are Greatly Increased. . Latonia Derby to Have 5,000 Added Over 00,000 in Stakes and Purses. CINCINNATI, O., March 1. Nine stake events, wjth a totaled added money valuation of 0,000. wore announced to Ik? run at the coming spring meeting of the Latonia Jockey Club. The announcement of the stake offerings was made by John Haehmc.ister on behalf of the new owners of the Latonia track. Mr. Hachnieister, although lie is not as yet affiliated with the new organization, after :i consultation with I. J. llanlon. president of the new Kentucky Jockey Club and others associated in the enterprise, volunteered to get out tiieir spring stake offerings. The stakes are. the same as have bpen run at past meetings at Latonia, but in every one there has been an increase in the added money. The Iatouia Derby, as usual, heads the list of these stakes, and it will have :3,000 added. Last spring general manager Hachnieister announced on behalf of the old management that the Kitonia Derby would have 0,000 in added money this year and geldings would be barred. The new owners are Just feeling their way and did not believe that they would be justified in carrying out the program as announced last year. So they have decided that the Latonia Derby shall have the sum named. They also believe that the Cincinnati racing public would like to see such high-class three-year-olds as Billy Kelly and Colonel Livingston compete with- such colts as .Kternal and . ..Ilunby ne;, -therefore they do not believe that :it. "would bo Wthe best interests of racing to bar gcldihg! this year. However, it looks as though the original intention of barring geldings will be made a condition of future Derbys. The increase in each stake over that of last year follows: 1919. 1918. Inaugural Handicap $ 4.000 $ 2.000 latonia Derby IT.,000 10,000 Merchants Stakes 3,000 l,r00 Quickstep Handicap .-. :t,000 2,000 Cllpsetta Stakes 4,000 2,000 Enquirer Handicap 5,000 1.5C0 Harold Stakes 3.000 2,000 Independence Handicap 4,000 2,500 Cincinnati Trophy 5,000 4,000 Total , 0,000 7,500 In addition to the added money in the stake events, more money will be added in the overnight races. "With such a pretentious stake list and the overnight races to be greatly increased over those of last year, it is safe to assert that about 00,-000 will be given to the horsemen during the coming meeting. TWENTY-EIGHT DAYS OF RACING. The new management has already made a tentative announcement of when the stake races are to be run. The Kentucky Jockey Club plans to add five days to the Latonia meeting, thus accounting for some of the -days cut out by the closing of Douglas Park. Therefore, if the State Itacing Commission approves, the Latonia meeting will open Wednesday, June 4, and close on Saturday, July 5. making twenty-eight days of racing for next spring. All of these arrangements are subject to the approval of the Itacing Commission. Tills will make in all sixty days of racing for Kentucky this spring, and statisticians have figured out that an" average of 0,000 per day Willi be given to the horsemen, or a grand total of 1919.sh00,000 for the three race meetings in the Ulue Grass State. Some slight changes have been made in the conditions of the races. Last year horses winning purses of ,000 or more after the publication of weights were penalized three or five pounds. The conditions of the Latonia stakes have been changed in most cases, these conditions having been made to read ,000 instead of the former amount, for the cheapest selling races this year will net the owners at least ,000. In addition to the nine stakes mentioned entries will be solicited for the Queen City Championship Stakes, for two-year-olds, at one mile, with ,000 added, to be run during the coining fall meeting. The stakes follow: Inaugural Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one mile and a sixteenth, ,000 added; Wednesday, June 4. Latonia Derby, three-year-olds, one mile and a half. 5,000 added; Saturday, June 7. Merchants Selling Stakes, three-year-olds and over, one mile. ,000 added; Wednesday, June 11.
