BARGAINS IN AUSTRALIA Present Day Cracks and Their Prices as Yearlings Considered Gloaming Cetigne and Biplane BiplaneAmong Among the Big Winners WinnersReasonably Reasonably Sold Many of the best horses racjng in Australia and Xew Zealand at tli liresent time never went into Hie sales ring as yearlings and some that did failed to find buyers which was lucky for their breeders while several others realized com para lively low prices thereby demonstrating that in horse buying as in other matters luck is a factor to be reckoned with Wolaroi was submitted to auction but no one wanted him at a reserve of 1250 and he re ¬ mained with the Mr Seaton for whom lie won about 80000 in stakes Cetigne was another for which then was no particular competition as a yearling his original purchaser Mr G Itaruett getting him for 1040 IIu won a little over 75000 for the latter before In sold him for 7800 and a winning contingency at the close of his fouryearold career and now the Graf ton horses total is 115033 115033Desert Desert Hold has always been raced by her breeder and until lie was disposed oft in Kugland as a threeyearold Magpie also carried the colors of his King Of fa whose Australian winnings total 22720 was not sold as a yearling and only made 1040 when ho went to auction in Kngland as a twoyearold Jetting back to yearling prices Mr G I Greenwood struck two of the greatest bargains of recent years when he gave 1950 for Biplane in 1910 and 1200 for Gloaming the fol ¬ lowing season In that owners colors Biplane won fi7 80 and Gloamings earnings already exceed 42500 Mr Greenwood will indeed be fortunate it lie inakeanny otUeji ck iupfitalilft urchasesin AiistfnlinT MODERATE PRICED GOOD WINNERS WINNERSLiugle Liugle which though somewhat unlucky during his career rates as one of onr best was a 1300 yearling and that brilliant mare Poitrina realized 1145 at the same age Greenstead another of The AVelkins progeny and one of which our handi cappcrs have a high opinion was sold for 520 as a yearling and Colugo another of our presentday crack sprinters for 1500 Satin Bird though not a topnotcher has an Kpsom Handicap and other races to his credit and was bought at the 1915 yearling sales by his present owner for lfi65 while Amberdown which has so greatly distin ¬ guished himself in Queensland was a 1040 year ¬ ling Kennaquhair was not catalogued as a yearling but Lordacre which is one of Queenslands cracks was disposed of at Randwick for 2080 West court which may not race again but credited Mr Seaton witli nearly iO000 in stakes was a bargain at 990 and The Fortune Hunter one of the few highpriced yearlings that have turned out well cost the late T C Williamson 5000 At the subsequent sale of horses in the estate of the latter lie was bought by T A Mayo for 2600 and though lie was nearl four before lie won anything he lias since put several thousands to his present owners credit creditIn In Xew Zealand Sasanof a Melbourne Cup and New Zealand Cup winner was a 2100 yearling while fit the same sale Mascot winner of the recent Auckland Cup made 1500 and Menelans 1917 Xew Zealand Cuy 2150 Sasanof has about 52500 to his credit Arch Marella which is now one of Xew South Wales good handicap horses was a cheap yearling In Xew Zealand where he was sold for 2fiO to H Friedlander who afterward got rid of him in Sydney at a low figure figureSOME SOME OF THE YOUNGER BRIGADE BRIGADETurning Turning to the threeyearold winners of good races in Australia this year Eusebius Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby has been decidedly profitable at 3250 and at 1000 Petrnvia lias been a bargain Woorawa Itoschill Guineas only cost 1040 and Bernard Hawkesbury Guineas SfiTiO Queenslands best threeyearolds Mollys Kobe and Syce Lad realized 1010 and 470 re ¬ spectively at the Brisbane yearling sales and the 1ertli Derby winner Oyadu was bought for 1040 at Itandwick Gloaming I have already referred to and lie stands right out as a fortunate purchase Outlook was not sold as a yearling and though as a twoyearold his owner paid a stiff price for him In may yet have reason to be well pleased with iiis purchase purchaseWith With the exception of those which have gone to twoyearolds raced by their breeders most of this seasons principal twoyearold events have been won by horses that were sold reasonably as year ¬ lings Coorinu Maribyrnong Trial Stakes which is out of the best was knocked down to C Wheeler for ly3U and at the Segcnhoe sale Mr McMaster got Bundclla Breeders Plate for 2730 while Sue Ginicntck Stakes only cost Mr Seaton 575 Ahasgiver December Stakes was sold privately for 1301 after failing to reach that figure at auction but the tidy price of 3040 was paid for Lisnavane Mimosa Stakes Artilleryman third in the Mari byrnong Plate was a 5200 purchase but Millieme which was second in that race was sold at Segenuoe for 1040 In western Australia Kurythmic 1025 and Kragoon 520 are the best of their age while Terentia and For My Lady which have done well in Queensland were bought for 1250 and 1025 respectively respectivelyFrom From the foregoing it will be gleaned that the best Australianbred nice horses of today include few highpriced yearlings but with stakes for two and threeyearold races so valuable a buyer witli money to spare is justified in risking a sub ¬ stantial sum in the purchase of any promising look ¬ ing yearling that takes his fancy At the same time even if lie pays anything from 5200 to 10400 it is never certain ho is going to get something better than a youngster costing only 520 Pilot in Sydney Referee
