NEW ZEALAND JOCKEYS WAR RACING This is a brief discription of one of New Zealands leading jockeys riding in the Mounted Machine Gun races in France a few months ago The races in question were run on good lines and supported bi many of Englands bestknown bookmakers and also a totalizator Arthur Oliver the Nev Zealand jockey was in request by English officers to ride their horses as after the first nice all noticed that this rough looking Digger was i horseman of no mean ability There was a roar of laughter among New Zealanders when Oliver made his first appear ¬ ance Always a dapper little jockey in New Zea ¬ land he was now attired in a muchworn flannel shirt with sleeves torn off just below the shoulder His old riding strides had seen better days and he wore no puttees He rode in his issue army l loots oots and spurs juul instead of his jockeys cap he wore a handkerchief with a knot at each corner Even among his army competitors he looked a very soft thing but after the first race the opinion was that there was no horseman on the ground to touch him The New ZealaiuKis consistently backed his mounts anil I think did well out of it On one occasion I overheard a bookie remark as the Diggers crowded around him to collect the dividends Come on Bill shake yourself Eres the ole New Zealand Division waiting to be paid out English Ex ¬ change
