EAST TO FURNISH DERBY FAVORITE Either Billy Kelly or Eternal Owned by Eastern Turfmen Will Be Favored One for Big Race LOUISVILLE Ky April 11 Although less than onethird of the nominations for tlijv Jvfijtiickx Derby this jvaT were marte l v horsemen who for the most part race in the east it is the consensus of opinion thai ail easternowned threeyearold will go to the post favorite and while the prospec ¬ tive Derby field may be one of the largest ever known for the race and contains some of the great ¬ est threeyearolds of this year the keenest of the many angles promises to be the rivalry between Eternal and Billy Kelly both claiming eastern ownership In the event of Iratli of these training soundly and without any mishap it will be a problem as to which is to go to the post as favorite Eternal a son of Sweep Hazel Burke and Billy Kelly a son of Dick Welles Glena are Kentucky bred which affords some satisfaction to western racing folk And it is further satisfying to know that both are greatgrandsons of that distinctively American sire Hanover HanoverBilly Billy Kelly gets his Hanover blood through Dick Welles and Teas Over dam of Dick Welles which is a daughter of Hanover Tea Rose Eternals Hanover lineage comes through his dam Hazel Burke a daughter of Semproiiius Retained II The latter was a daughter of Hanover Reclare and a halfsister of the brilliant Tradition TraditionDick Dick Welles a son of King Eric and a grand ¬ son of King Ernest was for several years the best racer at one mile in this country For a number of years he held the American record of 137 for one mile made while racing in the interest of Rome Respess Mr Respess bred Billy Kelly whose dam Glena a daughter of Free Knight Fautress is still at his Highland Stud near Cpvington Ky KyThe The eastern candidates slimlld reach the battle ground at Churchill Downs in splendid condition as most of them according to reports are training in a manner that is most flattering to their train ¬ ers Eternal is at Hot Springs under the capable training of Kim Patterson and having already won as a threeyearold is as far or farther advanced in his preparation than any of the other eastern candidates He will be shortly shipped to Churchill Downs together with The Wanderer which is Mr McClellands second string in his Derby bow bowBILLY BILLY KELLY WINTERED WELL WELLBilly Billy Kelly lias wintered in Maryland and ac ¬ cording to Guy Bedwell his trainer he is going sound and will be transferred to the local track for his final preparation War Pennant another formidable candidate in charge of trainer Bedwell has also wintered in the best of cohdition and is training in a most satisfying manner mannerJames James Rowe who has Blue Laddie and Vindex the Derbv candidates of the Harry Payne Whitney stable at Brookdale Farm In New Jersey William Hogan who is training P A Clarks strong candi ¬ date Dunboyne at Belmont Park S C Hildreth who is preparing Cirrus and Purchase his pair of eligibles at the same track George Ziegler who lias the Beverwyck Stables nominee The Trump at Gravesend and C M Garrison who is having his gelding Be Frank fitted at Havre de Grace are some of the other easterners who have nothing but favorable reports regarding the manner in which their charges are undergoing their preparation preparationIn In addition to the easterners already mentioned there are a number of others in training at Hot Springs regarding which one can judge by their races at that track must be training in highly satisfactory manner In less than a fortnight the great majority of those candidates enumerated above will reach Churchill Downs to join the as ¬ pirants for the rich stake who have been on the battle ground for some time These latter ones together witlithose now in training in Lexington comprise the pick of the western contingent and the ones around which will center the hopes of Ken ¬ tucky and the west Among the more prominent are George J Longs Clermont O A Bianchis Sen nings Park Middieton Jones Bugle Call B J Brannons St Bernard J Livingstons Major Parke Williams Bros Linden Tex Formans Iwiniwiu A L Rogers Texas Special J S Hawkins Dclico Gallaher Bros Regalo and E H Taylors Col Taylor
