PRESERVE OLD AMERICAN LINES LINESToo Too Much Imported Blood Causing Neglect of tho Best of Our Own BY CHARLES E BROSSMAN Recently there has been almrst a mania to secure imported thoroughbred racing stock of any character While then has been imported some most valuable specimens of the thoroughbred horse that will ul ¬ timately be of great and lasting benefit to this country many others that have been brought across have little intrinsic merit and should have bicn left on the other side Not Qiily that but the breeders in this country have neglected our tried and ap ¬ proved lines of rugged game dependable native bred sires for others of less character and quality The oldfashioned Americanbred brood mare full of the blood of Lexington Glencoe Bonnie Scot ¬ land Leamington Trustee Boston and American Eclipse will make the reputation of almost any sire and many of the laterday imported sires have become noted in America through the influence of these marcs simply because they had the oppor ¬ tunity and access to these potent vigorous Ameri ¬ canbred brood mares whereas if they had remained in Europe they never would have been heard of ofIt It has often been remarked that Lexinstons sons were failures in the stud But when one stops to consider that the Lexington mares produced the winners that made the reputation of numerous other stallions and that all of these mares were denied the sons of Lexington it is remarkable that the sons sired as many winners as they did At that they were reasonably successful and no blood is more desirable in a fashionable pedigree of today than that of War Dance or Norfolk both from Glencoe mares maresThe The male line of Glencoo has also been neglected Before it is too late breeders in this countrj should sek to revive this old and honorable line The Glencoo blood is potent whether found in the male or female line and should never be overlooked Thanks to the liberality and patriotic spirit of Frank R Hitchcock the 1nited States government is now possessed of one of liie best specimens of this line now living the Futurity winner Yankee by Hanover Correction a great race mare and a sister to the famous Domino Tiie tabulated pedi ¬ gree of Yankee shows many of the illustrious sires and matrons of thj turf in America whose perfonn ancas haVe been extolled aiid whose memory is Jin inspiration It is lo IHJ hoped that the United States bureau of animal industry will protect and preserve for future generations the blood lines of this valuable representative of the Glencoe line There are other stallions full of this oldfashioned American blood standing at moderate prices which were highclass race horses in their day They could run fast carry weight and cover a long dis ¬ tance in record time TJiese horses would if given the same opportunity demonstrate that tne Ameri ¬ canbred stallion as well as the Americanbred brood mare would be second to no horse in the world if judiciously crossed The old American blood that has been developed in this country ought never to be overlooked if a real race horse is sought
