WILDFOWL SANCTUARY IN LOUISIANA Jefferson Island the former home of Joseph Jefferson in Iberia Parish southern I uisiana and named by him Hob Acres after the character ii The Rivals made famous on the stage by the a tor is it is said to tc developed into a sanc t ary for wildfowl by Lawrence Jones and J L le Bayliss of Lexington Ky who recently ptir c ased the property It comprises 10000 acres A contract has been awarded for the construction of a dam along one edge of the property in order to reestablish a cypress swamp drained some years ago When the water accumulates it is projwsed to establish a immense heronry in order that the many species of herons in Louisiana especially the egret may build nests and raise their young over water as is their habit
