WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF IN DERBY DERBYOahlawn Oahlawn Turfmen Seem to Think Eternal May Du ¬ plicate Omar Khayyams Success in Big Race HOT SPRINGS Ark April 12 Whether history will repeat itself in the case of Eternal in the coming Kentucky Derby as with Omar Khayyam re mains to l e seen but it the present writing there is an excellent chance that it may Omar Khayyam was given the greater part of his preparation for the Churchill Downs big race at Oaklawn Park as lias Klernal anil the former showed the benefits of that preparation when he won that most coveteil event Ho was sent north earlier than Ktcrnal and when he left here it is doubtful if he was quite as fit as is Hie J AV McClelland colt right now nowOmar Omar Khayyam did not race until he got to Lexington while Eternal raced once here and worked several times faster than the average races by good horses were run The latter was working farther and faster earlier in the spring ithan was Omar Khayyam but both owner McClelland and trainer Kim Patterson took pains to see that he was not overfit and gave him ho chance to go stale staleOf Of the seventeen Kentucky Derby eligible quar ¬ tered at Oaklawn a majority of them were seen in action one or more times in races Naturally several of them showed that they are not of Derby caliber but u few others demonstrated that they are and their performances here were a stimulus for their owners to take a chance with them in the big Kentucky event This is especially true of Dnnnmoml Under Fire American Ace and Sailor Owner AV Shea and trainer Raleigh Colston con ¬ tended all along that Drummond was an excellent Derby prospect and early last winter they Iwgan negotiations for the services of jockey Albert John ¬ son to ride him in the big stake Johnson is wider contract to J II Rosseter who has Farmingdale and Raguarok in the Derby and it is more than likely that he will be called upon to ride the former In the event of their failure to get John ¬ son they will secure a rider who is a good judge of pace and can finish strongly as Drnmniond is a slow beginner and does not like to be hurried in the first part of a race raceJockey Jockey Andy Schuttinger who piloted Eternal to Victory in his match race with Billy Kelly at Laurel last fall will in all probability have the inount on him in the Derby He has been working the Sweep colt here part of the time and knows hia running disposition from every standpoint In addition to this lie has been keeping himself in excellent riding condition by taking a few outside mounts and he is prepared to start the season up tlie line in the best of condition conditionJockey Jockey Clifford Robinson who was the leading rider of the yean until he got a fall at New Orleans arid then came back at Oaklawn Park bet ¬ ter than ever will pilot Ed Stone in the Derby in the event that his contract employer E W Moore ejects to start him If he does not go to the post Robinson is certain to be on one of the contenders and he will no dqiibt be a lot of help to his mount especially if the field is large as he has a knack of keeping the horses he rides out of trouble and jams when crowding is prevalent Moore will send his horses direct from here to Churchill Downs at the close of the Oaklawn meeting He will take Robinson and jockey Willie Crump also under con ¬ tract to him to Lexington where he will look after their engagements
