FAMOUS FUTURITY STAKES TODAY ELEVEN STARTERS NAMED FOR THE THIRTIETH RUNNING OF THE HISTORIC RACE- MAN 0 WAR THE OVERWHELMING FAVORITE This Saturday will bs the last day of the successful Belmont Park autumn meeting. It will have for its greatest attraction the thirtieth running of the rich Futurity Stakes. For many years the Futurity was the most valuable race of the world for two-year-olds, but in the lean times that followed the two years cessation of racing in New York its net value dwindled greatly. Its high money mark was in 1890, when Potomacs share of its opulent return was 7,075. Its lowest was the S15,060 which fell to Pennant in 1913. Last year its net return was the more imposing 3,360 which Dunboyne won for his owner, and this year a further increase in its value is in sight. In recent years it has been overshadowed by the Hopeful Stakes in respect to net value, but this year it will nearly equal the big Saratoga race in that feature. Great race horses have won the Futurity; also a few inferior ones. Its first winner the famous Proctor Knott made a poor man rich when he won it for Sam Bryant; but Galen was the best horse in the race that day. and with a competent rider up would have won without much trouble. Chaos, its second winner, was moderate, but Potomac, His Higli-ness, Domino and Requital were high class, His Highness and Domino being the first and only winners to carry the extreme penalty successfully and win under 130 pounds. None of its winners has carried that much weight since Dominos year. One of the great surprises in its history came in 1896, when Ogden came out of the far west and with the practically unknown Tuberville in the saddle won from Ornament and others of the best of the year. No one would have been greatly surprised if his stablemate, Scottish Chieftain, had won, but outside of the stable Ogden was lightly considered. However, he was a good colt and his victory was no fluke. Following later on, Martimas was a good colt when he won for the Canadians. Chacornac was wonderfully fast and subsequently a winner in England. Ballyhoo Bey was a fine colt and Tod Sloan was brought over from England especially to ride him in the Futurity. Yankee was the last son of Hanover with a chance to win the big -race , and made good for tlieoncrsrhisriieBdire: Electioneer was the best two-year-old of his year. Colin was greatness itself. Sweep was high class, and Novelty was a great winner in this country and France, probably the best son of Kingston. The more recsnt Futurity winners took their laurels so near to the present year as to be fresh in the public mind. Fillies have played an honorabb part in the Futurity. Lucky Baldwins Sinoloa II. was third in the second Futurity. Yorkville Belle was second to His Highness and Lady Violet to Morello. The Butterflies won it in 1894 and was a real flyer. Then came LAlou-ette in 1897, probably the lowest class winner in the races history. Two wonderfully fast daughters of Hamburg won it in successive years Hamburg Belle in 1903 and Artful in 1904. No better race mare than Artful has stepped on an American track. The mighty Sysonby could only finish third in her year. Maskette, victress in 1908, was another superb creature. Besides those named Lux Casta, Tradition, Pope Joan, Bashti, Southern Maid and Kaskaskia were second in their respective years, while Love-not, Addie M. and Rosie OGrady finished third in theirs. In view of the fact that Man o War and Dominique on public form seem to stand out from the other eligibles, it has been anticipated that the Futurity would be contested by a small field. Underline circunistances, it is gratifying to find eleven named to start. Quite naturally it is to be expected Man o War will be the favorite, but there is a well defined impression in some quarters that Dominique will, prove his master, so it may prove an open betting market. It will be observed the western filly Miss Jemima is of those named to go. She is in the care of shrewd people, and if she runs, as she did in the Flash Stakes at Saratoga should figure in the first three at the finish. If a real surprise is to mark the end of the race it should be furnished by one of the Whitney trio. The following are the starters, together wi th their pedigrees, weights, riders and odds : Horse.
