First Running of Jockey Club Stakes In Daily Racing Forms Wednesday reports of training gallops at Belmont Park was an item showing that Purchase had traversed a mile and a half in 2:34, amounting practically to public notice of Sam Ilildrcths intention to start him in the first running of the Jockey Club Stakes at weight-for-age over the same distance. The institution of this race was in good part a response to the intelligent advocacy of the establishment of more and more weight-for-age races over considerable distances of ground by Walter S. Vosburgh, an advocacy in which Daily Racing Form has frequestly joined with profound conviction of its importance in the betterment of racing. Thefoundation of this race and the greater weight-for-age race, the Latonia Championship Stakes, will inevitably call for more action in the same line by competing and emulative racing bodies. There is minor result that should be about one brought by this race. That is, a new American record for a mile and a half. That record has been held by Goodrich ever since he ran the distance in 2 :30Vi at Washington Park July 16, 1S9S. Goodrich was no great shakes of a race horse, and the higher class horses sure to meet in the Jockey Club Stakes from year to year over tli3 faster Belmont Park track should furnish a faster mark. The race of today had a magnificent entry list, including such stars as Escoba, Dunboyne, Sweep On, Over There, Be Frank, Purchase, Sun Briar, Exterminator, The Porter, War Cloud, Roamer, Midway, Thunderclap, Cudgel, Billy Kelly, Sir Barton, Enfilade, Audacious, Sunny Slope, Omar Khayyam, Old Rosebud and Naturalist, but a surprising number of owners appear to have dodged the race, showing a deplorable lack of true sportsmanship.
