KING GORINS FINE VICTORY ; Outstays Jack Hare Jr. in the Falls City Handicap. : High Cost Takes Another Good Race Churchill Downs Meeting Draws Well. LOUISVILLE, Ky., October 23. R. L. Bakers veteran, King Gorin, ably ridden by Lyke, accounted for the Fulls City Handicap, worth 4,485 net, after u spirited duel with Jack Hare Jr., from which lie received a fourteen pounds weight concession. Midway landed third, Retting up in the last few strides to defeat Sway for that portion of the stakes. There were eight starters in the race, with Minto II. coupled in the betting with Jack Hare Jr., because of being trained by Kay Spence. Despite nil impost of 13:1 pounds. Jack Hare Jr. was raced into the lead at once and made a steady and fast pace in the difficult going, with Sway Ills closest follower. He continued going well and on the stretch turn seemed to have his followers well spent, but suddenly King Gorin loomed up with a rush and, after a brief drive in the stretch, the Uaker representative drew out to win easily. Jack Hare Jr. stayed gamely to the end and had no difficulty ill retaining second place. Churchill Downs inauguration of its nine days autumn meeting was under auspicious conditions despite an unfavorable track and threatening weather. The attendance was large and the social eiement out in full force. The racing was interesting and finishes in most instances fairly close. The volume of betting was satisfactory and was handled with promptness and dispatch. The public was away to a. good start in ...the initial dash, when Binding Tie won in easy style from Jngo and Lady Fair Play. The maiden dash, in which a dozen started, found Our llirtliday decidedly best ;uid the winner in a canter from Airdrie and Rapid Stride, with Sams lloy the disappointment. High Cost showed an extra good performance in the three-quarters handicap, which he won from Rifle and Galll-Curci. High Cost was favorite. Another choice that made good was The Swimmer, which triumphed over some higlily regarded colts that started in the fourth race. THRILLING FINISH IN SIXTH RACE. The sixth race produced a thriller, with Paris Muid just lasting to beat Ellison by a nose, with Hondo the same margin farther back and Counterbalance also right there. Some of the spectators took umbrage at the placing and started a mild demonstration in favor of Ellison. The final race went to Linden, which Avon from Jim Ileffering, with Sans Pour II. in third place. From a financial point todays opening was a record for a fall opening day, the attendance and volume of speculation being almost double that of last year. Masterson and Rogers have added the colt Cortland to their stable, having acquired him ou private terms from Gnllaher Bros. Words o Wisdou, owned by John Goode, and a veteran in these parts, was destroyed this morning as a result of an injury to one of his legs while at exercise this morning. E. R. Bradley has disposed of the brood mares Prestanella, by Cyllene; Breathing Spell, by Dark Ronald, and Bit of a Devil, by Helmet, to A. B. Hancock on private tonus. The two first named have been mated with North Star, and Bit of a Devil was bred to Black Toney. Mr. Bradley also stated that Beaming Beauty, which was severely injured sit Saratoga, is progressing splendidly and will be raced again next spring. By Golly and Best Pal are also recovering and will be in racing condition next spring. The United States Marine Band, here on a recruiting mission, were guests of the Kentucky Jockey Club this afternoon and rendered a concert between the races. W. M. Cain, represented in the openiug race by Trusty, claimed Binding Tie for ,000.
