CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF The young sire Polymelian has arrived at the Hlmyar Stud, near Lexington, Ky. One hundred and thirteen horses are entered in the seven races to be run at Churchill Downs today. The four-year-old Bill McCloy has abundajiee of speed, but apparently is faint-hearted and quits when the real racing begins. Old Rosebud is said to be "track sore," and has developed a positive aversion to racing. When at the iwst he is almost uncontrollable. The officials in the Jefferson Parish. La., track Ktnnd for botli fall and spring meetings will be Joseph A. Murphy, Francis Nelson and Herman P. Conkllng. The closing of the Epsom Derby and Oaks, 1921, the Doneaster St. Leger, 11121, and otho: racps for future years, which was announced for October 7, has been deferred. T. W. "Chicago" OBrien is sail to have profited handsomely over the victory of Jack Mount nt Empire City Tuesday. Jack Mount -was backed down from 8 to 4 to 1. With some knowledge of the inside facts about Hot Springs, Ark., and Oaklawn racing next spring, it moy be said that the situation is not so hopeless as the news of it lias declared. Coal shortage in Ireland caused tho stoppage of nil racing there late in September and early in October. The first order was to stop the sport for tho balance of the year, but later it was ;i,;un permitted. James Butler did not sell Spur nt his weeding out sale yesterday at Empire City. Spur is apparently as sound us ever, but is not the same ratV-r as of old. Mr. Butler says: "Out of sentiment .yr what he has been I will keep him until he dies." At Newmarket, England, according to Icite reports, The Panther is galloping in his oil style and moving freely and well in company. Tiie colt is evidently intended to run for the Cambri;eshire Handicap, to be run over the mile and an eighth at Newmarket next Wednesday. Duffy Lewis, the New York baseball player, tried to make a killing witli his His Majesty Nectary colt, Veteran, at Empire City last MVinOny. Veteran landed third in a wild scramble at tine end, behind Chief and Daydue. Hud Veteran won Lewis would have won a large sum. As it was he more than saved his investment by third place beta. Veteran wus 20, 8 and 4 in the betting.
