PROMISING YOUNG FRENCH H0RSL REASONS IN THE LINES OF DESCENT OF FAISAN DORE POINTING TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN RACING WHEN A THREE -YEAR -OLD By EXILE There is no better index to a colts chances of improvement from two to three than the style1 in which he winds up his first racing season. What the fillies will do improve or fail to reproduce is absolutely impossible to guess, and I am quite sure I saw an "improver" during my recent visit to Pimlico. Only twice have I seen the Frenchman Faisan Dore run. The first time he was beaten a head, just failing to get up, by Martha. Luckett over the three-quarters of a mile course, and on his last appearance, before going into winter quarters in that splendid new stable on the Ross stud farm at Laurel, gave a most stylish performance over the mile distance, beating such speedy ones as St. Aidan, Kinnoul, JVly Boots and others. Faisan Dore is none of your quick; flash-in-the-pah sprinters; a medium-sized bay, a bit of white in his face, and what in race course parlance would be termed a "slow beginner." On the final afternoon at Pimlico, after having at one time during the running of the race, along ..bout the half-mile ground, being last or next to it, he laid himself down to his task in most workmanlike style, fairly rushing past the pacemakers, coming on to win unextended. There is no telling just how good is this chap; moreover, he is now in the capable hands of the man who won this years Kentucky Derby with a maiden. Here is Faisan Dores pedigree, which to me is of unusual interest, for I am not as familiar with French families as I could wish. LOiseau Lyre, sire of Faisan Dore, is a son of Gallinule. Strange, isnt it, that so few Gallinule horses have found a home in this country? Faisan Dores dam is Silver Thread, a sister to Glare, dani of the 5,000 beauty the One Thousand Guineas winner Flair, by Ayrshire, sire also of Gas, dam of Cicero. Footlight, the granddam, is ancestress of many, among them the indomitable Prince Palatine. LOiseau Lyres turf career was cut short owing to the war, but he promised well enougli as a youngster, winning the Prix.de Nezel at St. Cloud of 4,000 francs. Any quantity of speedy blood is to be found in LOiseau Lyres pedigree by the way of Gallinule, Ayrshire and Footlight, and once in a while a real sticker, such as Prince Palatine, crops up". Dorette is a daughter of the Grand Prix winner Verdun,, son of Rabelais Vellena, by Gournay. Faisan Dore is therefore bred on the nicking of the Galopin and Isonomy strains, which union the other way up resulted in the production of Prince Palatine. Pomme dOr, granddam of Faisan Dore, bred a couple of winners in Polaria and Palmyra, and is by that good race horse of the Herod line, Callistrate, winner of the Grand Poule des Produits, 40,000 francs; Prix du Conseil Municipal, 100,000 francs; Prix Lagrange, etc., in France, and as a four-year-old won the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket, besides running second to La Fleche for the Ascot Geld Cup. Say what you will, the blending of the blood of Herod, Matchem and Eclipse is a winner, what with Man o War, Sir Barton and The Tetrarch bred on this plan of mating. The Tetrarch leads the English sires this year, practically at the first time of asking. Piquette is by Prologue, sen of that famous French horse Dollar, which won a Goodwood Cup and was by Flying Dutchman. For some time past I have thought the English were breeding their horses too much in a line, constantly doubling up the strains of Galopin, StockwelL Hampton and Isonomy, end that a free infusion of Herod blood through either Le Sancy or The Dutchman would work wonders, and here is The Tetrarch, a member of the Le Sancy line, playing the leading stallion role at the outset of his stud career. Faisan Dore is, of course, a member of the Bruce Lowe outside family No. 20. Outside or r.ot, good horses, such as Henry of Navarre and Virgil in this country, Gbzo and Traducer in Australia, Symington and St. Florian in England, have come from, this outside No. 20 family, and on account of his outside figure the case of Faisan Dore is not a hopelass one, and could ihe scene be changed to far away Australia I should certainly have a saver on him for next years Kentucky Derby. .
